November 2, 2025

The C25 cryogenic stage, which will serve as the upper stage in the LVM-3 launch vehicle, was successfully ignited in orbit during the CMS-03 mission. This crucial milestone involved firing the thrust chamber of the C25 engine while in space, a first for Isro, providing invaluable data on engine performance, stability, and control in microgravity conditions.

According to Dr. Narayanan, this successful space test is pivotal for Isro’s future launch capabilities as it allows the agency to place multiple satellites into orbit with far greater precision and efficiency. The enhanced control and thrust provided by the C25 stage will facilitate heavier payloads and complex multi-satellite deployment missions, directly benefiting flagship programs such as India’s human spaceflight initiative, Gaganyaan, and proposed space station projects.

The C25 stage had undergone rigorous ground testing previously, but this in-flight demonstration enhances confidence in Isro’s self-reliant cryogenic engine technology.

This achievement marks a significant step in India’s space program trajectory, reducing reliance on foreign technology, cutting costs, and dramatically expanding operational capability in deploying advanced communication satellites like CMS-03 and beyond.

This development, coupled with the launch of CMS-03, Isro’s heaviest communication satellite, cements India’s standing as a formidable space power, showcasing indigenous innovation in space propulsion systems and heavy-lift rocket technology that will drive the nation’s space ambitions forward.

Dr. Narayanan’s briefing emphasised that the C25’s successful test-flight heralds a new era of efficient, precise, and autonomous satellite launches by Isro.
