A new study, recently published in Plos One, zeroed in on the stabilimentum, calling it a remarkable structural decoration.<\/p>\n<p>A team of Italian researchers from distinguished European universities launched a three-year investigation. From 2018 to 2020, they studied the stabilimenta produced by three distinct populations of the spider Argiope bruennichi in the forests of Sardinia. This spider weaves distinctive <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/science\/this-antibiotic-spider-silk-makes-a-better-bandage\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">zigzag patterns<\/a> along its radial threads. Many <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/science\/gene-edited-spider-red-silk\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spider species<\/a> incorporate these \u201cornamental structures,\u201d and their sheer diversity and complexity have long implied they serve some crucial functional purpose.<\/p>\n<p>However, the function of the stabilimentum has been a subject of intense, ongoing debate, researchers noted. However, if the prey was stuck in the web and struggling (thrashing about), the stabilimenta successfully transmitted the alarm to a wider area of the web.
