{"id":115505,"date":"2025-11-03T11:22:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T11:22:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/115505\/"},"modified":"2025-11-03T11:22:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T11:22:11","slug":"paul-mccartney-addresses-sinister-beatles-death-rumour-for-first-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/115505\/","title":{"rendered":"Paul McCartney addresses sinister Beatles death rumour for first time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Beatles legend is looking back at his career with Wings which began when the Beatles split as has responded to a rumour that he was killed in a car crash in the 60s<\/p>\n<p>07:00, 03 Nov 2025Updated 07:24, 03 Nov 2025<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1_Paul_McCartney_c_Mary_McCartney.jpg\" alt=\"Paul McCartney\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Sir Paul McCartney recalls how he wanted a new band totally different from the Beatles when he formed Wings<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">For several years from 1966 there were persistent rumours that <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/paul-mccartney\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Paul McCartney<\/a> had been killed in a car crash and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/the-beatles\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Beatles<\/a> had brought in a lookalike to keep the band going.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">The Secret Service had a hand in the deception, so the conspiracy theory went, with believers speculating that the cover of the 1969 Abbey Road album depicted a funeral procession \u2013 with a white-clad <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/john-lennon\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">John Lennon<\/a> representing a priest, George Harrison an undertaker, Ringo Starr a gravedigger and a barefoot Paul himself representing a corpse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">While he obviously was alive and well, now, nearly 60 years on, the singer admits he did feel as if part of himself had \u201cdied\u201d at the end of The Beatles. We had heard the rumour long before but, suddenly, in that autumn of 1969 stirred up by a DJ in America, it took on a force all of its own, so that millions of people around the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/world-news\/\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">world<\/a> believed I was actually gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Sir Paul says that he and wife Linda were \u201caware of the power of gossip and the absurdity\u201d of the stories circulating \u2013 and that they had moved out of London \u201cprecisely to get away from the kind of malevolent talk that was bringing The Beatles down\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">He goes on: \u201cBut now that over half a century has passed since those truly crazy times, I\u2019m beginning to think that the rumours were more accurate than one might have thought at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">\u201cIn so many ways, I was dead, a 27-year-old about-to-become-ex-Beatle, drowning in a sea of legal and personal rows that were sapping my energy, in need of a complete life makeover.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">The legendary singer-songwriter \u2013 who left the Fab Four in April 1970 \u2013 credits moving to a sheep farm in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/scotland\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Scotland<\/a> with Linda and their first child together, Mary, with helping him get through this depressing time. But cocooning himself in this way also allowed him to emerge renewed as a musician, having left behind some elements of \u201cBeatle Paul\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">He says: \u201cThe old Paul was no longer the new Paul. For the first time in years, I felt free suddenly leading and directing my own life. I was not conscious at the time of moving away from the long shadow cast by The Beatles, but that\u2019s exactly what I was doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">In the book, Sir Paul explains that he was keen that anything he did next musically was very different and not \u201cBeatles 2.0\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Shying away from creating a supergroup, he released the 1971 album Ram with Linda and future Wings member Denny Seiwell on drums. But critics and some fans were less impressed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Rolling Stone magazine dubbed the LP \u201cincredibly inconsequential and monumentally irrelevant\u201d, while NME called it weak and stale. Amid the criticism, Sir Paul came close to quitting music altogether.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">He says: \u201cI did get depressed. I was getting slagged off by everyone, and that does make you question if you\u2019ve still got it. It makes you think, \u2018Can I still do this? Can I make a decent record?\u2019 I did seriously consider packing it in on a number of occasions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Instead, he \u201clearned not to care\u201d what critics said. He formed Wings, with Linda on keyboard, Denny on drums and former Moody Blues\u2019 Denny Laine on guitar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Their album Band on the Run reached No1 in 1974, followed by Venus and Mars the next year. The band also scored a <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/christmas\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Christmas<\/a> No1 single with Mull of Kintyre in 1977. It was the first song to sell more than two million copies in the UK and is one of the country\u2019s top 10 best-selling songs of all time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">But before those successes came, the band would turn up at universities in a van and play gigs unannounced, charging 50p entry as they honed their craft and learned to play together. \u201cIt was as simple and mad as that,\u201d Sir Paul recalls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Band on the Run made them huge stars \u2013 but not everything went smoothly when they recorded it in Lagos, Nigeria. The studio wasn\u2019t up to scratch and Paul and Linda were mugged one night by six people, including one with a knife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">The robbers took money, a notebook with lyrics and some demos. Sir Paul recalls: \u201cLinda is a ballsy chick. She\u2019s screaming, \u2018Don\u2019t touch him! He\u2019s a musician! He\u2019s just like you. He\u2019s a soul brother. Leave him alone.\u2019\u201d After recovering from the shock the band got back on track.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Although there was more drama when Paul fainted from a bronchial spasm caused by too much smoking. Years later, as success grew and Wings began to tour the world, Paul was arrested in Japan when 219 grams of cannabis were found in his hand luggage. He says: \u201cIt was the maddest thing in my life \u2013 to go into Japan, which has a seven-year hard-labour penalty for pot, and be so free and easy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">\u201cI put a bloody great bag of the stuff right on the top of my suitcase.\u201d Daughter Stella now says: \u201cA nine-year-old could have hidden weed better than my parents.\u201d It proved to be a huge mistake \u2013 Paul spent nine days in prison and the 1980 tour dates were cancelled.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/0_WINGS___high_res_jacket.jpg\" alt=\"The new Wings book\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The new Wings book is filled with secret and great anecdotes<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">After returning to England, with musical differences becoming apparent, Paul decided to release his solo album McCartney II. Plans for a US tour were dropped and Wings officially disbanded in 1981 when Denny Laine announced he had quit. As a result, Sir Paul turned to his solo career \u2013 and he has been making music and touring for 45 years. In the foreword to the book, the 83-year-old reveals plans for a new album in 2026 and says that his love for songwriting remains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">\u201cI have 25 songs that I\u2019m finishing in the next few months,\u201d he says. \u201cNew songs that are interesting. I can hear something, I can hear a piece of music, and think, \u2018Oh, I love that.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">\u201cAnd I\u2019ll incorporate that feeling into a new song. And often, a constant thread through my writing is nostalgia, the memories of things past. I don\u2019t question too much how it happens. I\u2019m just thrilled that it does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">* Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run by Paul McCartney is out on November 4, published by Allen Lane.
