{"id":1160,"date":"2025-09-04T11:45:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T11:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/1160\/"},"modified":"2025-09-04T11:45:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T11:45:08","slug":"crisis-recovery-cafe-launched-in-whanganui-to-aid-mental-health-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/1160\/","title":{"rendered":"Crisis recovery cafe launched in Whanganui to aid mental health support"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cEmergency departments are not always the best place to go \u2013 they are brightly lit and noisy &#8211; so part of fixing that is rolling out crisis recovery cafes across the country because we know they work,\u201d Doocey said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt\u2019s about having the opportunity, for someone in a time of distress or crisis, to come into a safe place like this and be supported by peer support lived-experience workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe think they can make a real difference supporting people with mental health issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">Whanganui\u2019s cafe is the first of six being set up around the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">Whanganui MP Carl Bates said it was fantastic the city had the first cafe because mental health is something raised to him by the community regularly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt is fabulous that we have got such passionate and skilled individuals to support us in Whanganui,\u201d Bates said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">The cafe will run as a crisis recovery safe-place five days a week from Wednesday to Sunday, 3pm-9pm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/whanganui-chronicle\/news\/whanganui-crisis-cafe-in-works-as-police-pull-back-from-mental-health-callouts\/EMSU2U2TPFD5NJLXBWF3U52EN4\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/whanganui-chronicle\/news\/whanganui-crisis-cafe-in-works-as-police-pull-back-from-mental-health-callouts\/EMSU2U2TPFD5NJLXBWF3U52EN4\/\">Balance Aotearoa general manager Rana <\/a>Te Huia said it was a great opportunity for her and the staff to take on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe have been working on it for a long time with the community, trying to open some way of supporting people after-hours in a nice warm space that people can go,\u201d Te Huia said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt\u2019s really amazing that the Government is putting funds into peer support and mental health support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">Aston said her personal experiences with mental health developed a passion for helping others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cBeing able to be in the community and create things that give people other options is a real passion of mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">Whanganui Mayor Andrew Tripe said it was good to see Whanganui prioritised because mental health statistics were \u201cstark\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt was great for Whanganui to host the Minister for Mental Health for the opening of the new Crisis Recovery Cafe at Aunty\u2019s Cafe \u2013 it\u2019s a place to feel heard, supported and safe,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">Doocey said the concept aligned with a push towards more peer support. <\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWhen I was growing up, talking about mental health issues had a lot of stigma and discrimination so people would not talk about their own experience in the mental health system, now we see it as a real strength,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"VYEVUgvTMz\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe wanted to work with local NGOs and community organisations which are ready to go.
