A vegetation fire in the rural south-east Auckland suburb of Whitford this afternoon has been contained.<\/p>\n
Six fire trucks, one helicopter and other support vehicles were called to the scene just after 12pm, a Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson told 1News.<\/p>\n
Footage taken by 1News shows thick smoke billowing from the area.<\/p>\n
The fire, which measured 200x100m in size, was contained to the hillside, the spokesperson said around 2.20pm.<\/p>\n
Crews have since left the scene, Fire and Emergency said in an update just before 5pm.<\/p>\n
“The fire is contained and is now a controlled burn that’s been left with the property owner.”<\/p>\n
A resident at the scene told 1News she looked out of her window to see “the place was just full of smoke”.<\/p>\n
“It’s just got out of control… I am a little bit scared considering we’ve got animals.”<\/p>\n
She said the fire had “notched my nerves up a little”.<\/p>\n
