{"id":116913,"date":"2025-11-04T05:49:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T05:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/116913\/"},"modified":"2025-11-04T05:49:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T05:49:08","slug":"half-yours-wins-melbourne-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/116913\/","title":{"rendered":"Half Yours wins Melbourne Cup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Superstar jockey Jamie Melham has created history as the first female jockey to complete the Caulfield-Melbourne Cups double by riding Half Yours to victory in the race that stops a nation.<\/p>\n<p>A decade after Michelle Payne became the first female jockey to win the Cup, close friend Melham matched the feat in stunning fashion on Half Yours for Ballarat-based father-son training duo Tony and Calvin McEvoy.<\/p>\n<p>After easing to start at AU$9 (NZ$10.32), the five-year-old gelding produced an explosive finish in the Flemington straight to charge to victory by 2.75 lengths, with two-time winner Joseph O&#8217;Brien&#8217;s Irish mare Goodie Two Shoes second at AU$41 (NZ$47).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvnz.co.nz\/news\/news-clips-str-34wkgrgm3uasb2iukuq4ai66tga-1762229983268\/watch-the-melbourne-cups-history-making-finish-in-depth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Watch: The Melbourne Cup&#8217;s history-making finish &#8211; Watch on TVNZ+<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ciaron Maher&#8217;s Middle Earth took third a further 1.5 lengths away at AU$26 (NZ$29.80), with Chris Waller&#8217;s mare River Of Stars fourth at AU$19 (NZ$21.80). French raider Presage Nocturne failed to flatter in 19th place after being heavily backed into AU$5.50 (NZ$6.30) favouritism.<\/p>\n<p>Melham steered through several gaps, including one to most past husband Ben Melham on Smokin&#8217; Romans, to secure the win.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wanted to ride him as quiet as I could and at the 400 &#8230; I had to let him go,&#8221; Melham said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There was a tight gap and I said, &#8216;Move over Ben, I&#8217;m coming through&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The next gap was extremely tight and I had no say.
