data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The world has failed to meet its main climate change target of limiting the rise in global temperatures <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/01\/18\/climate\/paris-climate-goal-threatened-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to 1.5 degrees Celsius<\/a>, and will likely breach this threshold in the next decade, the United Nations\u2019 Environment Programme said on Tuesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhknfqas003h3b6nqnbihrs6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The annual Emissions Gap report said because of countries\u2019 slow action to reduce planet-heating greenhouse gas emissions, it was now clear that the world would exceed the core target of the 2015 Paris Agreement \u2014 at least temporarily.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhkngpyh003m3b6n2ikutfyp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis will be difficult to reverse \u2013 requiring faster and bigger additional reductions in greenhouse gas emissions to minimize overshoot,\u201d UNEP said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhkngpyh003o3b6nfpcp5al0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Lead report author Anne Olhoff said deep emissions cuts now could delay when the overshoot happens, \u201cbut we can no longer totally avoid it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhkngpyh003p3b6nws40q0uo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The 2015 Paris Agreement commits countries to limit the global average temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and to aim for 1.5 degrees.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhkngpyh003q3b6njacrx5g3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet governments\u2019 latest pledges to cut emissions in future, if met, would see the world face 2.3 to 2.5 degrees Celsius of warming, UNEP said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhkngpyh003r3b6nj2c8q5fu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s around 0.3 degrees Celsius less warming than the UN\u2019s projection a year ago \u2014 indicating that new climate pollution-cutting plans announced this year by countries including top CO2 emitter China have failed to substantially close the gap.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhkngpyh003s3b6n4ylxz13c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            China pledged in September to cut emissions by 7-10% from their peak by 2035. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reutersconnect.com\/all?search=all%3AL4N3W81H5&amp;linkedFromStory=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Analysts<\/a> note the country tends to set modest targets and exceed them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhkngpyh003u3b6nt0byimln@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The findings add pressure to the UN\u2019s COP30 climate summit this month, where countries will debate how to kick-start and finance faster action to rein in global warming.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhkngpyh003v3b6nvewgmucg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Paris Agreement temperature goals were based on scientific assessments of how each increment of global warming fuels worse heatwaves, droughts and wildfires. For example, 2 degrees of warming would more than double the share of the population exposed to extreme heat, compared with 1.5 degrees . Warming of 1.5 degrees would destroy at least 70% of coral reefs, versus 99% at 2 degrees.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhkngpyh003w3b6nlj8ur0q9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Current policies \u2014 the ones countries already have in place \u2014 would lead to even more warming, of around 2.8 degrees, UNEP said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhkngpyh003x3b6np5qdarsc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The world has made some progress.
