\n\tBrendan Fraser<\/a> and Rachel Weisz<\/a> are reuniting for another \u201cMummy\u201d adventure.<\/p>\n

\n\tFilmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who call themselves Radio Silence<\/a>, are set to direct the fourth installment in the decades-old action franchise. Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett are best known for 2019\u2019s \u201cReady or Not\u201d and reviving the \u201cScream\u201d franchise for Paramount in 2022. <\/p>\n

\n\tUniversal, the studio behind the original monster movies, had no comment.<\/p>\n

\n\tFraser led the 1999 reboot of \u201cThe Mummy<\/a>,\u201d which co-starred Weisz and became a box office hit. The blockbuster \u2014 which follows a treasure hunter\u00a0who accidentally awakens a cursed Egyptian priest with supernatural powers \u2014 also cemented Fraser as a bankable action hero. He returned for two sequels, 2001\u2019s \u201cThe Mummy Returns\u201d and 2008\u2019s \u201cThe Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,\u201d though Weisz only appeared in the former. Universal attempted to resurrect \u201cThe Mummy\u201d with Tom Cruise in 2017, but to no avail. The film was a commercial misfire and failed to kick off the studio\u2019s so-called \u201cDark Universe,\u201d which was intended to utilize Universal\u2019s catalogue of classic monsters for a series of interconnected adventures.<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter stepping away from Hollywood due to personal issues, health problems and an assault allegation that he leveled against the former HFPA president, Fraser enjoyed a major career comeback with 2022\u2019s \u201cThe Whale,\u201d for which he earned the Oscar for best actor. During the press cycle for \u201cThe Whale,\u201d Fraser told Variety that he\u2019d be open to revisiting his most popular role, adventurer Rick O\u2019Connell, in another \u201cMummy\u201d sequel.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t know how it would work,\u201d he said at the time<\/a>. \u201cBut I\u2019d be open to it, if someone came up with the right conceit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFraser at least has an idea of what won\u2019t work. Back in 2022, he dissected why Cruise\u2019s take on \u201cThe Mummy\u201d failed to connect with audiences. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt is hard to make that movie,\u201d Fraser said. \u201cThe ingredient that we had going for our \u2018Mummy,\u2019 which I didn\u2019t see in the new one, was fun. That was what was lacking in that incarnation. It was too much of a straight-ahead horror movie. \u2018The Mummy\u2019 should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reuniting for another \u201cMummy\u201d adventure.
