{"id":118411,"date":"2025-11-05T01:06:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T01:06:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/118411\/"},"modified":"2025-11-05T01:06:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T01:06:08","slug":"unemployment-rate-rises-to-near-nine-year-high","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/118411\/","title":{"rendered":"Unemployment rate rises to near nine-year high"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The unemployment rate has risen to a near nine-year high of 5.3%, according to new figures released by Stats NZ today.<\/p>\n<p>It was another nudge up from the previous figure of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1news.co.nz\/2025\/08\/06\/unemployment-rate-rises-to-52-stats-nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">5.2% in the June 2025 quarter<\/a> and 5.1% in the March 2025 quarter.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The unemployment rate has been over 5% for the last four quarters. The last time that the unemployment rate was 5.3% was in the December 2016 quarter&#8221;, said Stats NZ labour market spokesperson Jason Attewell.<\/p>\n<p>There were 160,000 unemployed people in the September 2025 quarter. In the June 2025 quarter, there were 158,000.<\/p>\n<p>The increase was in line with what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1news.co.nz\/2025\/11\/04\/worst-behind-us-but-unemployment-tipped-to-rise-to-near-9-year-high\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">economists had expected<\/a>, with the vast majority tipping the rate to land at 5.3%.<\/p>\n<p>The underutilisation rate, which measures untapped capacity in the labour market and includes those unemployed or underemployed, was 12.9%, up from 12.8% in the June 2025 quarter. This is the highest rate since late 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The level of unemployment of young people between 15 and 24 years was 15.2%, with the total not in education or training rising to 13.8%.<\/p>\n<p>The regions with the highest unemployment were Northland, Auckland and Waikato with rates of more than 6%, with all South Island regions below 5%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-greyDarkFaded\">The morning&#8217;s headlines in 90 seconds, including the Police Commissioner\u2019s opinion on publishing leaked audio, two charged over a barbershop attack, and David Beckham and the King swap fashion tips.
