Photo \/ May Nate Nad<\/p>\n<p class=\"ZzQnbEvs\" style=\"display:none\">It was the second supermoon this year after last month\u2019s Harvest Moon and is one of four in four consecutive months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ZzQnbEvs\" style=\"display:none\">Stardome astronomer Josh Aoraki told RNZ there were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/supermoon-largest-full-moon-of-2024-rises-this-week-in-new-zealands-skies\/PULF2DTCKNHNTKGQE5DSWCPYR4\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/supermoon-largest-full-moon-of-2024-rises-this-week-in-new-zealands-skies\/PULF2DTCKNHNTKGQE5DSWCPYR4\/\" target=\"_blank\">usually a few supermoons<\/a> each year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ZzQnbEvs\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe term \u2018supermoon\u2019 is more of a media term than a scientific one,\u201d Aoraki said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ZzQnbEvs\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe scientific term for what we are describing is what\u2019s called perigee and apogee, they are the two points where the moon is at its closest and its furthest to Earth, and that\u2019s because the moon\u2019s orbit is elliptical.
