To find out, Bazaar spoke to two leading trichologists \u2013 Claire Fullam, founder of Remi<\/a>, and Hannah Gaboardi, Viviscal ambassador and founder of The Hannah Gaboardi Clinic<\/a> \u2013 to separate fact from fiction.<\/p>\n

Think of collagen as the body\u2019s support system. “Collagen is the most common protein we have, making up a significant portion of our skin, hair, bones, and muscles,” explains Hannah Gaboardi. “Essentially, it is the framework that holds everything together, keeping it strong yet flexible. At its core, collagen is made from amino acids, which are the building blocks of all proteins. When these amino acids link together, they form long, tough fibers that don\u2019t easily stretch. This makes collagen ideal for providing structure and resilience wherever the body needs strength.”<\/p>\n

Claire Fullam agrees, adding that “on a cellular level, collagen works by forming the scaffolding of the skin\u2019s tissue. It provides structural support and strength to the skin, while also interacting with receptors within our cells to group them and migrate them \u2013 all very important work. Collagen isn\u2019t just found in the skin, but also makes up a significant part of your bones, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons.”<\/p>\n

Since collagen is integral to the scalp, which is where hair follicles are rooted, maintaining its levels could help create the optimal environment for growth.<\/p>\n

Can collagen supplements really boost hair growth?<\/p>\n

This is where the conversation becomes a little more nuanced. Collagen isn\u2019t a magic fix for hair loss<\/a>, but it can support the underlying conditions for healthier growth.<\/p>\n

“Collagen supplements can support some growth \u2013 but only if you\u2019re lacking in collagen, which most of us are after a certain age,” explains Fullam. “But it\u2019s not the answer most are looking for. Around 93% of hair loss is androgenetic, which is DHT-related. If you don\u2019t block DHT, your collagen supplement won\u2019t be able to achieve what you expect. Similarly, if you are suffering with an autoimmune type of hair loss, collagen won\u2019t stop that. A supplement is a nice add-on for general skin, hair and nail health \u2013 but not a specific tool.”<\/p>\n

Gaboardi agrees, but notes that collagen can still play a meaningful role in maintaining the environment for strong hair: “Collagen makes up much of the scalp where hair follicles sit, so replenishing its levels may help maintain a firm, elastic, and supportive environment.
