A \u201ccluster\u201d of small fires caused\u00a0by fireworks\u00a0led to\u00a0multiple callouts in W\u0101naka last night.<\/p>\n
The annual Guy Fawkes celebration saw six trucks attend a small but concerning blaze by the edge of Sticky Forest about 9pm.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Police were investigating fires today as they were busy with a\u00a0crash near\u00a0Glendhu\u00a0Bay at the same time.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Fire and Emergency NZ said six trucks were sent to\u00a0Kirimoko\u00a0Crescent at 9.16pm – three\u00a0from\u00a0W\u0101naka, two\u00a0from\u00a0Luggate\u00a0and one\u00a0from\u00a0Lake Hawea stations.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Some of the trucks\u00a0arrived\u00a0to\u00a0a\u00a020m by 20m fire, which was quickly put out with the help of locals.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u00a0were locals with garden hoses trying to help us out, which kept it at bay,\u201d a\u00a0Fenz\u00a0spokesperson said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt could\u00a0have\u00a0taken off and have been\u00a0very dangerous.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Crews were there for about an hour\u00a0and attended callouts\u00a0in\u00a0Luggate\u00a0and Beacon\u00a0Point also.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Lake \u00a0H\u0101wea\u00a0volunteer member Teresa Cotter was at the station and said the W\u0101naka blazes meant their township of 7000 was left without a fire service for\u00a0a short time.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u00a0was a\u00a0busy\u00a0night,\u00a0we had a prior call to a paragliding accident – and then it was all\u00a0go\u00a0from there.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u00a0were taking in the [crashed] van, but they managed to get it under control fast, luckily.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
There were also plenty of fireworks happening around H\u0101wea, she said.<\/p>\n
A\u00a0Facebook\u00a0post was put up by the volunteer brigade reminding people to be mindful\u00a0of\u00a0fireworks and safety.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Sergeant\u00a0Lorne Cappell, also a volunteer firefighter,\u00a0went to the scene with the\u00a0H\u0101wea\u00a0crew and said fires were under control by the time they arrived.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cA little bit of excitement, but we are\u00a0grateful\u00a0all was settled and there was no damage.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Sergeant Darren Cranfield, of W\u0101naka, said there were several fire-related incidents reported in the town and they would be following up as to who was responsible.\u00a0<\/p>\n
