{"id":122695,"date":"2025-11-07T09:42:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T09:42:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/122695\/"},"modified":"2025-11-07T09:42:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T09:42:11","slug":"popular-summit-forced-to-close-due-to-reckless-fireworks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/122695\/","title":{"rendered":"Popular summit forced to close due to &#8216;reckless&#8217; fireworks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  [&amp;_p]:tit-sub-xl tit-sub-xl md:[&amp;_p]:d-tit-sub-xl md:d-tit-sub-xl mb-[1.3rem]\">A full overnight closure will be in place on Mauao Mt Maunganui over the next three evenings in response to &#8220;reckless&#8221; fireworks which were let off on the mountain this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Tauranga City Council said Mauao would be full closed from pm to 5am from Friday, November 7 to the morning of Monday, November 10.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">The council said fencing and signage would be in place at all closure points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Fireworks were first discharged from the summit of Mauao on Tuesday and Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Tauranga City Council said four M\u0101ori Wardens were stationed at Mauao on Thursday evening as a response. However, despite their presence, fireworks were again let off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">The number of people spread across the maunga meant it was not possible to contain the activity, the council said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">A Mauao Trust representative said &#8220;we do not take this decision lightly&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;While we appreciate this closure impacts those who enjoy Mauao in the evenings, this is the only way to ensure the safety of the public and the protection of the maunga.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/mount-maunganui-from-the-top-of-mauao-4EMLHCMVZBC25OYP4SKRXUG7J4.jpg\" alt=\"Mount Maunganui from the top of Mauao.\" width=\"800\" height=\"449\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"ImageMetadata__MetadataParagraph-sc-hi5x8q-0 cWTYyG image-metadata\">Mount Maunganui from the top of Mauao. (Source: Local Democracy Reporting)<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">The representative said the recent behaviour was &#8220;reckless, and the fire danger is real&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;Closing Mauao overnight is not our preferred course of action, but it has become necessary. We will reassess after the weekend.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Tauranga City Council said Mauao was protected by a permanent fire ban, and fireworks and open flames were strictly prohibited.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;This time of year brings particularly high fire risk, with dry vegetation and strong winds.
