{"id":123033,"date":"2025-11-07T14:39:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T14:39:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/123033\/"},"modified":"2025-11-07T14:39:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T14:39:09","slug":"atelier-xi-creates-cave-like-pavilions-for-aydc-public-art-centre-in-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/123033\/","title":{"rendered":"Atelier Xi creates cave-like pavilions for AYDC Public Art Centre in China"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Architecture studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/atelier-xi\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Atelier Xi<\/a> has completed the AYDC Public Art Centre in Guiyang, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/china\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">China<\/a>, dividing its spaces across three sculptural stone-clad <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/pavilions-tag\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pavilions<\/a> set in a landscaped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/park\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">park<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/art-centres\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">art centre<\/a> comprises a library, an events space and an outdoor stage for the &#8220;culture-driven experimental hub&#8221; A Yun Duo Cang (AYDC), which translates to Our Land of Dreams.<\/p>\n<p>It has been shortlisted in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/awards\/2025\/shortlists\/categories\/architecture\/small-project\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">small project category<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/awards\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dezeen Awards 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2266844 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/sq-aydc-public-art-centre-atelier-xi_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x852.jpg\" alt=\"AYDC Public Art Centre by Atelier Xi\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The AYDC Public Art Centre is made up of three cubic pavilions<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atelierxi.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Atelier Xi<\/a>&#8216;s approach eschewed a large, singular building, distributing the centre across three separate cubic pavilions.<\/p>\n<p>Each of these has a distinct, carved-out interior, informed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Karst\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">karst<\/a> caves of Guizhou province.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Instead of a singular monumental building, the design breaks the program into a constellation of sculptural pavilions dispersed across the landscape,&#8221; Atelier Xi&#8217;s principal Chen Xi told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2266830 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/aydc-public-art-centre-atelier-xi_dezeen_2364_col_15-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"AYDC Public Art Centre by Atelier Xi in China\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The project is shortlisted in this year&#8217;s Dezeen Awards<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This approach challenges conventional notions of centralised cultural institutions by prioritising openness, decentralisation, and environmental integration,&#8221; Xi added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Drawing inspiration from the native karst cave formations of Guizhou province, the resulting architecture is not imposed onto the land but appears to emerge from it \u2013 blurring the line between built form and landscape.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2266820 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/aydc-public-art-centre-atelier-xi_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Library at AYDC Public Art Centre by Atelier Xi\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>A library building features arched glazing overlooking the park<\/p>\n<p>AYDC Public Art Centre&#8217;s pavilions, named the Xima Library, Ginkgo Chapel and Dali Stage, are designed to have a distinct feel and connection to the surrounding park.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the library, which features a sunken reading pit surrounded by full-height glazing, each pavilion is entirely open to the elements. According to Xi, this means the weather and seasonal changes are part of the overall &#8220;immersive experience&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/02\/14\/library-tea-plantation-china-atelier-xi\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/sq-library-atelier-xi-china_dezeen_2364_col_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"The Library in Ice-Chrysanthemum Field by Atelier Xi\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Atelier Xi creates angular library within Chinese tea plantation\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The library sits beneath a large, vaulted ceiling. It has a central reading pit wrapped by a concrete terrace, which extends over a shallow pool of water, reflecting its sculptural form.<\/p>\n<p>At the opposite end of the park, the chapel is formed by four bulging walls shaped like inverted arches that create an intimate, skylit events space at its centre.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2266829 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/aydc-public-art-centre-atelier-xi_dezeen_2364_col_14-852x1168.jpg\" alt=\"Concrete library in China by Atelier Xi\" width=\"1724\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Atelier Xi added a sunken reading pit to the library<\/p>\n<p>For the central stage, a single arched section shelters a concrete plinth, which looks out over a paved plaza. The plaza is finished with stepped seating and terracotta tiles laid in a herringbone pattern.<\/p>\n<p>Each pavilion was constructed using a steel frame, clad externally with travertine stone panels and internally with curving steel panels.
