Fonterra\u2019s 2023 Dairy Woman of the Year<\/a> \u2013 pleaded three times that she hadn\u2019t noticed the removal of the role.<\/p>\nShe too wanted Federated Farmers back at the table.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re probably ahead of the other 10 councils because we have got [that representation].<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, we\u2019re the only ones with it, but we are successful and other councils look to us because of that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Council chair Craig Williamson confirmed only Taranaki had Federated Farmers sitting on a committee overseeing waterways and pollution punishments.<\/p>\n
Williamson was surprised that no objections were raised at the induction.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat was a good time to talk about it and get a better understanding of the whys,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSuddenly, we\u2019re bringing it up in this meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n
Councillor Bonita Bigham took the deputy chair from Walker, who held it last term.<\/p>\n
She questioned why an agriculture representative must come from Federated Farmers.<\/p>\n
\u201cPkW is the biggest farming operator in the rohe [region].<\/p>\n
\u201cCould they be considered to come and sit in that space instead?\u201d<\/p>\n
Parininihi ki Waitotara (PkW) oversees reserve lands owned by mana whenua but farmed under 326 perpetually-renewable leases, mostly by non-M\u0101ori.<\/p>\n
PkW itself also runs extensive dairying operations.<\/p>\n
Councillor Tom Cloke suggested the Feds could be on call as advisors when needed.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey remain on Policy [and Planning] and that\u2019s where I think they really should fit.\u201d<\/p>\n
TRC chief executive Steve Ruru promised a paper on committee options, satisfying the farm lobby, so the new committee structure passed unanimously.<\/p>\n
At the start of the meeting, fellow councillors unanimously elected Williamson to his first full term in the chair.<\/p>\n
Bigham was also unanimously elected his deputy, despite her TRC M\u0101ori constituency being doomed after this term, as it was voted down in the referendum at October\u2019s election.<\/p>\n
The council was bound to accept iwi appointments for the two top committees as put forward through the mana whenua regional body, Te T\u014dpuni Ng\u0101rahu.<\/p>\n
Legally, the iwi representatives are at the table under the Treaty Settlements of Te \u0100tiawa, Taranaki and Ng\u0101ruahine \u2013 but in effect they have also become waka representatives for Aotea tribes in the south, Kurahaupo around the western cape and Tokomaru in the north.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen the mountain puts out the call, all the iwi respond,\u201d Bigham said.<\/p>\n
The Policy and Planning Committee iwi representatives are Tuhi-Ao Bailey, Dion Luke and Mitchell Ritai.<\/p>\n
For Operations and Regulatory, the representatives are Richard Buttimore, Alison Cole and Shi-Han Ngarewa.<\/p>\n
