The woman started CPR and the toddler eventually started to breathe again. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt was such a relief,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

The woman asked people to fetch items that would keep the boy warm. A \u201clovely\u201d lady offered a red woollen jacket.<\/p>\n

A member of the public had called 111.<\/p>\n

Hato Hone St John and Fire and Emergency New Zealand confirmed they responded to a medical event at Cable Bay at about 6pm.<\/p>\n

The woman stepped back when firefighters from the Mang\u014dnui Volunteer Fire Brigade arrived.<\/p>\n

The boy was taken by ambulance to Kait\u0101ia Hospital in a critical condition. <\/p>\n

The idea she may have saved a life still felt surreal to the woman. <\/p>\n

She said the decision to go shell hunting when she did, had been \u201cmiraculous timing\u201d.<\/p>\n

The woman had received a message from the boy\u2019s mother yesterday asking if she was the \u201clady in the purple hat\u201d before thanking her. <\/p>\n

She said she was heartened by those who also stepped in to help.<\/p>\n

\u201c… This is the real beauty of humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman said the incident was a timely reminder for people to brush up on their first-aid<\/a> skills ready for the busy summer season. <\/p>\n

She said her first-aid skills had come automatically to her, and encouraged others to learn. <\/p>\n
