Featuring an ensemble cast led by David Tennant, The Hack delves deep into the phone hacking scandal that toppled the Murdoch-owned News of the World. Tracing the intersecting strands of those who uncovered the scandal, and the police investigation into a decades old unsolved murder, the series is a full-circle moment for Tennant \u2013 he was among the thousands who had their phone tapped by the now-defunct tabloid. With the actor at his usual \u201cchameleonic best<\/a>,\u201d and the writer of Adolescence<\/a> co-penning the screenplay, it\u2019s no surprise that this true crime drama has been labelled as \u201cspectacular<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n Last Samurai Standing (Netflix, November 13)<\/p>\n Not to be confused with 2003\u2019s The Last Samurai, the gloriously gruesome Last Samurai Standing is an adaptation of the Japanese novel and manga of the same name. Set a decade after the abolition of the Samurai class, the brutal Battle Royale-esque series follows Junichi Okada as Shujiro Saga, a warrior desperate to save his ailing wife and child. Seeking salvation, he enters a cutthroat competition where hordes of fearless fighters duel it out for the fortune awarded to the last one standing. If you\u2019ve got a Squid Game or Sh\u014dgun shaped hole in your watchlist, Last Samurai Standing is the fix.<\/p>\n I, Jack Wright (ThreeNow, November 11)<\/p>\n Created by Unforgotten\u2019s Chris Lang, this riveting whodunnit centres around the mysterious death of the titular patriarch and the earth-shattering revelations in his last will and testament \u2013 he has written out his third wife and three sons, leaving them penniless. What follows is a wicked tapestry of greed and deceit, as scandalous secrets arise and family feuds fester. \u201cNarratively bold<\/a>,\u201d with meta-textual, true-crime style interviews, Jack Wright has been called a \u201chomespun Succession with a dab of Dallas and an Agatha Christie-esque mystery at its heart<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n El 47 (AroVision, November 13)<\/p>\n Smashing domestic box office records, and taking home Best Picture at the 39th Goyas, EL 47 is a \u201cclassic triumph of the underdog tale<\/a>.\u201d Based on an inspiring true story, Eduard Fern\u00e1ndez is Manolo Vital, a Barcelonian bus driver and community leader, whose working-class neighbourhood has been underserved for decades. With its streets deemed too narrow and unsafe for public transport by authorities, Fern\u00e1ndez, in a powerful act of peaceful dissidence, hijacks his own bus to prove a point. \u201cA terrific film about how a small axe can bring down a big tree<\/a>,\u201d EL 47 will warm the cockles of your heart. <\/p>\n Malice (Prime Video, November 14)<\/p>\n Best known for his comedy chops, Jack Whitehall goes against type in this psychological thriller reminiscent of The Talented Mr Ripley and Saltburn. The Fresh Meat alumni stars as Adam Healey, a charismatic male nanny who wiggles his way into the life of a wealthy family holidaying in Greece. Featuring David Duchovny and Carice Van Houten as the heads of the family, Whitehall pits them against each other and plots to bring down the once harmonious household. Tune in to Malice to see if Whitehall has what it takes to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.<\/p>\n Pick of the Flicks: Life After (DocPlay, November 10)<\/p>\n
