{"id":129859,"date":"2025-11-11T17:08:15","date_gmt":"2025-11-11T17:08:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/129859\/"},"modified":"2025-11-11T17:08:15","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T17:08:15","slug":"prominent-sportsman-identity-dies-otago-daily-times-online-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/129859\/","title":{"rendered":"Prominent sportsman, identity dies | Otago Daily Times Online News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prominent sportsman and Port Chalmers identity Bruce Malcolm has died.<\/p>\n<p>He was 90.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Malcolm died on November 7, at Montecillo Veterans Home, with wife, Margaret, and all his children by his side.<\/p>\n<p>He left his mark on the Otago sporting landscape for several decades.<\/p>\n<p>He was a member of the Queens Drive Rowing Club from 1951-57 and won a national youth title in 1952 and a maiden title in 1954.<\/p>\n<p>He was selected for the Melbourne Olympics in 1956 as a member of the rowing eight, but New Zealand Olympic Games selectors rejected the nomination.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rowing officials protested and the crew carried on training for another couple of weeks,&#8221; Mr Malcolm told the\u00a0Otago Daily Times\u00a0in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a big disappointment. It was bloody terrible. I never got over that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Malcolm started bowls at the Port Chalmers Club in 1970 and won 12 Bowls Dunedin titles. But his highlight was winning the national pairs title with Gordon Duggie in Christchurch in 1990 when they beat Stan Lawson and his son, Gary, 18-13.<\/p>\n<p>He was a New Zealand men\u2019s bowls selector from 1998 to 2008. The highlight of that work came at the 2008 World Bowls in Christchurch when Gary Lawson and Russell Meyer won two gold medals and the men\u2019s team won the Leonard Trophy teams title for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Malcolm was a utility forward and played his first senior rugby game for Port Chalmers in 1953 and played five years of premier rugby. He made more of a mark as an administrator, where he was on the NZRFU junior advisory board for 10 years, on the management committee of the Otago Rugby Football Union from 1974 to 1989 and was ORFU president in 1988.<\/p>\n<p>In 1994, he was awarded an MBE.<\/p>\n<p>He was secretary of the Port Chalmers Waterside Workers Union from 1978 to 1993 and was president of the New Zealand Watersiders Union from 1982 to 1995.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, an article in the\u00a0ODT\u00a0said &#8220;in his heyday, Bruce was known as the unofficial mayor of Port Chalmers&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At one stage people reckoned I was in every organisation at Port except the Plunket Mothers,&#8221; he quipped.<\/p>\n<p>His death notice said he was a &#8220;dearly loved lifetime partner and husband of Margaret for 69 years&#8221;, and much loved father and father-in-law of Sandra and Rob Richan (Manapouri), Kevin and Jane Malcolm (Oamaru), Rhonda and Paul Hopkins (Oamaru), Brent and Wendy Malcolm (Auckland) and Brenda and Warren Myers (Tauranga).<\/p>\n<p>He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Allied Media<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Prominent sportsman and Port Chalmers identity Bruce Malcolm has died.
