{"id":132370,"date":"2025-11-13T04:36:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-13T04:36:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/132370\/"},"modified":"2025-11-13T04:36:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T04:36:09","slug":"news-corp-australia-chair-says-outlets-not-part-of-climate-crisis-denial-machine-environment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/132370\/","title":{"rendered":"News Corp Australia chair says outlets not part of climate crisis \u2018denial machine\u2019 | Environment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A senior News Corp Australia executive has defended the company\u2019s platforming of climate science deniers, saying its news outlets were not part of a \u201cdenial machine\u201d spreading misinformation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">News Corp Australia\u2019s executive chair, Michael Miller, told a Senate inquiry into climate and energy misinformation there was no coordination across the organisation\u2019s news outlets to feature voices sceptical of climate action or Australia\u2019s current goal to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The chair of the committee, Greens senator Peter Whish-Wilson, asked Miller \u201cwhy do you platform climate sceptics\u201d and said News Corp \u201c[relies] on lots of opinion pieces from lots of people that are climate deniers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI hope you are not suggesting that we should censor them?\u201d Miller responded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis country has a great democracy and healthy debate and to answer your question there are people with differing opinions to your own but that doesn\u2019t mean they can\u2019t have a voice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Miller said the company was \u201cexpressing a range of views\u201d and \u201cto say that we platform climate deniers, I would need more detail, but we need to be able to have a debate in this country and that is what we do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Whish-Wilson said several submissions to the inquiry had claimed News Corp Australia was part of a \u201cclimate denial machine\u201d that included PR companies, thinktanks and consultancies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Asked if News Corp was part of that machine, Miller said: \u201cNo. We are part of a debate machine maybe, but not a denial machine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The News Corp-owned Sky News Australia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2022\/jun\/14\/sky-news-australia-is-a-global-hub-for-climate-misinformation-report-says\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has previously been identified as a global hub for climate misinformation<\/a> in analysis published by UK thinktank the Institute for Strategic Dialogue in 2022. The company has rejected that analysis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In one submission to the inquiry, Climate Action Against Disinformation \u2013 a coalition of groups working to combat false narratives on climate and energy \u2013 said readers of some News Corp publications were more likely to accept misinformation than those who read other outlets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A submission from not-for-profit group Climate Communications Australia detailed analysis of the 22 most-read online news outlets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Those containing the highest degree of misinformation, the submission claimed, were News Corp Australia outlets, including The Australian and Sky News.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Asked by the Labor senator Michelle Ananda-Rajah to respond to the analysis, Miller said: \u201cHow that report defines misinformation I would challenge. An opinion someone disagrees with is not misinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Campbell Reid, News Corp Australia\u2019s group executive on corporate affairs, policy and government relations, also defended the company\u2019s reporting of the 2019 and 2020 black summer bushfires.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2020\/jan\/08\/police-contradict-claims-spread-online-exaggerating-arsons-role-in-australian-bushfires\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">story in The Australian, shared by Donald Trump Jr<\/a>, suggested arson was a major factor in the fires. We use Google reCaptcha to protect our website and the Google <a data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"https:\/\/policies.google.com\/privacy\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" class=\"dcr-1rjy2q9\" target=\"_blank\">Privacy Policy<\/a> and <a data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"https:\/\/policies.google.com\/terms\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" class=\"dcr-1rjy2q9\" target=\"_blank\">Terms of Service<\/a> apply.<\/p>\n<p id=\"EmailSignup-skip-link-17\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-label=\"after newsletter promotion\" role=\"note\" class=\"dcr-jzxpee\">after newsletter promotion<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">One expert has said the story helped fuel misinformation around the world that arson \u2013 rather than climate breakdown \u2013 was the major factor behind the fires.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">During the fires, one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2020\/jan\/10\/news-corp-employee-climate-misinformation-bushfire-coverage-email\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">News Corp employee sent an all-staff email<\/a> accusing the company of spreading misinformation about the fires.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Emily Townsend, a commercial finance manager at News Corp, wrote: \u201cI find it unconscionable to continue working for this company, knowing I am contributing to the spread of climate change denial and lies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Miller rejected Townsend\u2019s claim and said News Corp outlets had written 3335 stories about the bushfires and 12% had mentioned climate change and 5% had mentioned arson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Asked if there was coordination across News Corp to feature the views of thinktanks like the Institute of Public Affairs \u2013 a rightwing group known for its opposition to climate action \u2013 Miller said there wasn\u2019t, and each masthead was free to make its own editorial decisions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Miller was also asked about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2020\/jul\/31\/james-murdoch-resigns-board-news-corporation\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James Murdoch\u2019s 2020 resignation from the board of News Corp<\/a> and his reported frustrations about the company\u2019s climate coverage and the \u201congoing denial\u201d he said was present in its Australian outlets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Miller said: \u201cClimate change is real, I have been on the record for that. So has Rupert Murdoch and so has Lachlan Murdoch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI don\u2019t believe that James Murdoch was reading our titles to come to that conclusion.
