{"id":134684,"date":"2025-11-14T12:41:33","date_gmt":"2025-11-14T12:41:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/134684\/"},"modified":"2025-11-14T12:41:33","modified_gmt":"2025-11-14T12:41:33","slug":"with-the-rothko-pavilion-the-portland-art-museum-opens-itself-up-to-the-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/134684\/","title":{"rendered":"With the Rothko Pavilion, the Portland Art Museum opens itself up to the city"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QQWCL7FSURH2PPMKXETGSPWBVA\">Walking up downtown Portland\u2019s Southwest 10th Avenue on a rainy late fall day, your head down against the wind, you might be surprised to see a reflection on the dark, wet bricks: A glint of sunlight, almost. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YBNCOVB5YNAZDC525SWPPUPFXA\">Look up. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RTR4Y62GYRG5ZETJU3KCB3YSWY\">A huge circle of gilded bronze, sculpted to look like tree branches bent into a perfect, spoke-less wheel, stands in front of the new Mark Rothko Pavilion. This is \u201cthe sun,\u201d created in 2018 by Swiss sculptor Ugo Rondinone. It\u2019s a bright light on a dark day and a glowing echo on a sunny day. Unlike the dark stone sculptures of historical figures that used to sit atop pedestals on the South Park Blocks, it\u2019s warm no matter the weather, bouncing light instead of sucking it in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"O5O56MVYKVHGVI5UKJ5ZAD2PHY\">And it is an aperture onto the pavilion, which connects disparate pieces and opens the Portland Art Museum to the city on all sides.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"New Mark Rothko Pavilion at Portland Art Museum\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/43LB2NI2CND6DIDMNOFJ6R4CSA.JPG\"  \/>At the back entrance to the Portland Art Museum\u2019s Rothko Pavillion a section of \u201cthe sun,\u201d by Swiss sculptor Ugo Rondinone, is reflected in a puddle on the ground. In the parable, he\u2019s headed to work on the Portland Streetcar when he overhears two Portland State University students talking:<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OYIDBYQY2FGVXG535V3QHPH3VU\">\u201cWhat is that place there?\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/entertainment\/2024\/04\/rothko-pavilion-will-be-connect-buildings-and-open-portland-art-museum-to-downtown.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">one student says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ESJYG2B6GBCKDGNLBLQJ6OASBM\">\u201cI think it\u2019s a museum,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/17\/arts\/design\/portland-art-museum-renovation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">says the other.<\/a> \u201cI\u2019m not sure. By the time he leaves, after nearly 20 years at its helm, the inscrutable, unconnected brick facades of the two buildings that make up the Portland Art Museum will be completely transformed and no one will mistake \u201cthat place\u201d for somewhere with nothing going on inside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2XOEPKEYDBHQ5NU756J73SEESU\">Named after Portland-raised <a href=\"https:\/\/portlandartmuseum.org\/blog\/honoring-mark-rothkos-portland-legacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">painter Mark Rothko,<\/a> the $116 million Rothko Pavilion connects the two halves of the art museum and turns two brick monoliths into one open invitation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UJJTD6KRO5AAHFULV4PNH7S42E\">Over a thousand people donated to<a href=\"https:\/\/portlandartmuseum.org\/blog\/capital-campaign-completion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/portlandartmuseum.org\/blog\/capital-campaign-completion\/\"> 98% privately funded campaign<\/a>, which ended up being $5 million over budget. Those included donations as low as $5, up to $13.5 million from Arlene Schnitzer and $5 million each from Mary and Tim Boyle, Trudy and Pat Ritz, Nani S. Warren and Helen Jo and Bill Whitsell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NO2GOCSRNZGYHN4LDNMYSJAZXY\">The Rothko Pavilion <a href=\"https:\/\/portlandartmuseum.org\/blog\/portland-art-museum-celebrates-opening-of-major-expansion-with-four-days-of-free-admission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">will open to the public on Thursday, Nov. 20. <\/a>A week and a half later,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/entertainment\/2025\/08\/portland-art-museum-director-tapped-to-lead-one-of-largest-galleries-in-the-us.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> Ferriso will start his new job<\/a>: director of the Dallas Museum of Art.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GEEIMKSITVAB5MQGA3OH5YYG7E\">He will leave on a high note, with the new plaza along the park blocks bearing his name. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LMJLGU3IQZG3VHDD3DH6AXUZHE\">The 24,000-square-foot pavilion is nearly 20 years in the making, a testament to long-term vision that made it through economic downturns, civil unrest and a global pandemic. <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Portland Art Museum closed\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/CXYOF3MHXRCJVIEKEZ4HEUBTHI.jpg\"  \/>The Portland Art Museum closed to the public amid the coronavirus pandemic.Jamie Hale\/The Oregonian<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5YNQOYJXMNAOJF6NGNXT6BJQLE\">\u201cA lot of small moves add up to something bigger,\u201d Ferriso said, from across a table in his office in the museum. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XZLOXPMUKNEPZMVX3IVNMUE3GA\">That incidental, overheard conversation on a streetcar reinforced his thinking at the time, that he wanted to embed the museum in Portland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"B3RVUBEWJZENRKSIXFYMPPB7KA\">\u201cI felt the museum was disconnected with the community,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KXCAQ6PUV5FIVIONDC3UQ3HNQ4\">\u201cI felt the museum did a very good job with bringing the world to Oregon,\u201d he said, but he wanted to open the stream the other direction to, to bring Oregon to the museum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"J7NEP6JSWBAMNFP5LP2S5SMZYI\">And so he put energy into the youth programs, <a href=\"https:\/\/portlandartmuseum.org\/discounts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">making kids and school tours free<\/a>. He brought in local artists and more accessible work. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IEZ3CGV7OVGPXMECPOE3B5Q7AQ\">\u201cI started with the foundational elements: the staffing, the program, the finances,\u201d Ferriso said. \u201cThe building was the last part of the puzzle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FOSH3CCF2FBSDDY5YD6DVHBK2I\">***<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NTEUHPALFRAA5GN2G32G6Q5EUQ\">What is the Rothko Pavilion? (The Oregonian)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YAEQD5LAMFB5NLRAPVQDXHDJ2U\">The Main Building is what most people think of when they think \u201cPortland Art Museum.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MARI3RJRZJD2PKU3TLZINIOHDE\">It\u2019s where you traditionally would enter the building, on Southwest Park Avenue, in a building designed by Pietro Belluschi and completed in 1932. A public walkway that would be the continuation of Southwest Madison Street separates the Main Building from the Mark Building, a former Masonic temple, built in the 1920s and acquired by the museum in 1992.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Masonic Temple on the South Park Blocks.\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/2ZNZXAEG3VC6FPY2DYOZ5TC5NM.jpg\"  \/>Masonic Temple on the South Park Blocks in 2002.LC- THE OREGONIAN<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"U26MB2NIPNHR7EAC3AWPPLUT34\">Before the pavilion, the buildings were technically but inelegantly connected by an underground passage. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LPUYJL6Z3BCC5KNUCUWJYDWS4U\">Both the Main and Mark buildings had their deficits. Some areas had no bathrooms, the galleries were decidedly warrenlike. The old elevators didn\u2019t always work. Neither side was especially inviting. <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Headline\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/KPBNEQ3PZ5ERHAN2HWQRCX52ZM.jpg\"  \/>A docent at the Portland Are Museum leads a group of teachers and parents through an exhibit  in 2012.LC- The Oregonian<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2DSMN6K7GBA3ZOM3557T7YJ3OE\">The Rothko Pavilion is essentially a connector and a problem solver: There are more bathrooms, more elevators, more space for art and more space to just sit. And the whole thing is glass, a direct response to the impenetrable brick of the Main and Mark buildings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PDV6GFN6P5BNXED5LLUCPO2O4U\">\u201cI did think initially the building was going to be a little bit more straightforward,\u201d Ferriso said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FJUNP23TEFBKPBXIGS45HW6TTE\">He didn\u2019t fully grasp the architectural challenges that would present themselves along the journey of connecting two buildings on different blocks, built in different decades. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4DBAUU6QNZF3BN3PT6GHPQFJRQ\">There are 11 elevation changes, he said, which gives a sense of the complexity of the project.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"cutaway\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/MERG5WMJH5E7ZIWZAZUPJ47HGM.jpg\"  \/>Portland Art Museum campus cross-section rendering.Hennebery Eddy Architects<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TA52S3Z7UFBWHI5LNUIRRLRNKI\">The project was designed in collaboration with Portland-based Hennebery Eddy Architects and Chicago-based Vinci Hamp Architects and adds nearly 100,000 square feet of new or upgraded gallery and public space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EHWS7FTHRFAVXBWHJKJ4X2AXJA\">Instead of a third building, said Tim Eddy, one of the founding principal architects and the president of Hennebery Eddy Architects, during a press preview event, the pavilion \u201cwas intended to be the connective tissue between the two historic buildings.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BPR35UHNM5BQBDTRGXRJ2PLVRQ\">Seismic joints mean that in an earthquake, it would function as an independent building, but in practice, it means a visitor can see from one side of the Mark building all the way to the Main building. It means three new elevators, plus repurposing of the two existing ones, so guests get to all 11 of those various elevations without using stairs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4NXEFN72RVG2BIV4MX5YPNFEBU\">According to the director of collections and exhibitions, Donald Urquhart, a trip that used to take 45 minutes, from a gallery on the top floor of one building to a gallery on the top floor of the other, now takes a few seconds.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Heavy equipment in a construction site between two existing buildings\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/3CHUYNLW5BB4HESMVG7VYMUSS4.JPG\"  \/>Construction on the Rothko Pavilion in 2024.Dave Killen \/ The Oregonian<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"745AYYSSTNB2VIISUXLZ6SOADQ\">\u201cWe don\u2019t have a linear museum anymore,\u201d Urquhart said, from one of the central floors where a bright red Dale Chihuly piece sits near a traditional Kwakwaka\u2019wakw feast dish. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KUD4TDH5CVA45NLQIMFQUZH6LY\">It used to take a map to navigate through the museum, Urquhart said, but now, the space is opened, all sides and galleries are suddenly accessible. And the experience of wandering through the museum is that of exploring, not of getting worried you might get lost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IFMUQVCESBEO5CSMHPLHTXNDH4\">Art is everywhere. Downstairs, get mesmerized by a video installation from Marco Brambilla. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RVVCHZNW3JFZPLNERUFVEOIITI\">Portland itself becomes an art object. Terraces lead to outdoor spaces where the city is framed in different ways.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FQA7IYNIRFEMPNYBJYV3OCREIM\">The museum even slips outside its own boundaries, with the public walkway that is open at all hours and cuts through the building, giving passersby a view into the Black Art and Experiences Galleries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IKZSZ6KPQVEVTDV6YPZBQM7IKM\">Initially, the walkway <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/art\/2017\/12\/portland_art_museum_walkway.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/art\/2017\/12\/portland_art_museum_walkway.html\">was only going to be open when the museum was open<\/a>, which was deeply unpopular with those who lived near the museum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UKZ3CYYCANGITGTTIF4FMISQUI\">So the museum amended the plan. Now, pedestrians who want to cut through become museum guests, peering in on a gallery as they walk home, or to the grocery store or class.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HRKHIVVFPNG3JGKSCOOBICSI64\">Creating the exterior walls from specialty, glare-resistant and bird-safe glass means people inside can look out on the city in all directions and people outside on both sides can see in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JUSWT4VRKBDJ5BG3JTZMUELPWM\">Walking by on a rainy day, a sunny day or anything in between, the corona of \u201cthe sun\u201d shining brightly, people moving in and out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/retail\/2025\/09\/indulge-in-a-slice-of-rothko-cake-at-portland-art-museums-new-bistro-style-cafe.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/retail\/2025\/09\/indulge-in-a-slice-of-rothko-cake-at-portland-art-museums-new-bistro-style-cafe.html\">the bustling new cafe<\/a> and underneath the building from Park to 10th, it is clear that Ferriso did what he set out to do: He took a building that previously had one entrance and made it all entrances.
