With a new documentary about his life making waves, Eddie Murphy<\/a> is taking time to reflect on the highs \u2015 and lows \u2015 of his era-defining career. <\/p>\n

In a wide-ranging interview with The Hollywood Reporter<\/a> to promote \u201cBeing Eddie,\u201d Murphy spoke about his once-tumultuous relationship with director John Landis<\/a>, who appears in the documentary. <\/p>\n

The two men were seemingly adversaries for some time<\/a>, with one altercation allegedly becoming<\/a> violent. However, Murphy said it\u2019s all in the past. <\/p>\n

\u201cThat heat that I had with John Landis 35, 40 years ago, that\u2019s so long ago,\u201d the actor and comedian explained. \u201cI love John, and he directed two of the best movies of my career \u2014 \u2018Trading Places\u2019 and \u2018Coming to America.\u2019 For years, we\u2019ve had no heat whatsoever.\u201d <\/p>\n

To emphasize his point, he added: \u201cWe even did a movie after that shit. John Landis directed \u2018Beverly Hills Cop III.\u2019 The movie sucked, but we were buddies after.\u201d <\/p>\n

The beef between Landis and Murphy first became public knowledge after the two worked on \u201cComing to America,\u201d released in 1988. At a press conference to promote the movie, Murphy reportedly told the crowd, \u201cVic Morrow<\/a> has a better chance of working with Landis than I do.\u201d<\/p>\n

The reference to Morrow was particularly stinging. The actor was among three who were killed in a helicopter crash<\/a> while on the set of \u201cTwilight Zone: The Movie,\u201d partially directed by Landis, in 1982. <\/p>\n

Though Landis was found not guilty<\/a> of manslaughter in connection with Morrow\u2019s death, his reputation in Hollywood was heavily damaged. He was also said to have been upset<\/a> with Murphy when the actor failed to make an appearance during the criminal trial. <\/p>\n

Speaking to Rolling Stone<\/a> in 1989, Murphy said he\u2019d asked Landis to direct \u201cComing to America\u201d at a time when the filmmaker\u2019s \u201ccareer was hanging by a thread\u201d in the wake of the \u201cTwilight Zone\u201d trial. <\/p>\n

\u201cI figured the guy was nice to me when I did \u2018Trading Places,\u2019 so I\u2019d give him a shot,\u201d he said at the time. \u201cI\u2019m a popular actor in this town, and to have a guy who was as fucked up as he was get a job with me gave him some renewed credibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in his Rolling Stone<\/a> chat, Murphy blasted Landis for having \u201cfucked me over,\u201d though he offered no specifics as to what that entailed. <\/p>\n

\u201cNow he\u2019s got a hit picture on his r\u00e9sum\u00e9, a movie that made over $200 million, as opposed to him coming off a couple of fucked-up movies, which is where I\u2019d rather see him be right now,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

Landis, whose last film was the 2010 dark comedy \u201cBurke & Hare,\u201d is among many A-listers featured in \u201cBeing Eddie.\u201d Dave Chappelle, Arsenio Hall, Jamie Foxx, Chris Rock and Tracee Ellis Ross also make appearances. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe only time the audience usually sees me is if I\u2019m promoting a movie, so they\u2019re not really ever seeing me,\u201d Murphy told Netflix\u2019s Tudum<\/a> of his interest in appearing in the doc. \u201cThey\u2019re seeing my comic persona \u2014 doing my shtick. But in the documentary, this is me. This is my house, this is my family, and this is how I did it.
