<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/bay-of-plenty-times\/news\/christmas-appeal-tauranga-crossing-collects-donations-for-tauranga-community-foodbank\/EVSRHKRNGZC2ZDU3PK4JFNMXXU\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/bay-of-plenty-times\/news\/christmas-appeal-tauranga-crossing-collects-donations-for-tauranga-community-foodbank\/EVSRHKRNGZC2ZDU3PK4JFNMXXU\/\">up from 20 trees<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rVZUAWgtAFijHNuRNP\" style=\"display:none\">This year, shoppers are being invited to help decorate the trees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rVZUAWgtAFijHNuRNP\" style=\"display:none\">Tauranga Crossing marketing manager Lana Stretton said the feedback from last year\u2019s initiative described the venture as \u201cheart-warming\u201d and \u201cincredibly moving\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rVZUAWgtAFijHNuRNP\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe wanted to grow the initiative to reach even more households.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"rVZUAWgtAFijHNuRNP\" style=\"display:none\">She said that for many of the families who received a tree last year, it was not just about the physical gift.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rVZUAWgtAFijHNuRNP\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt was the feeling of being remembered and cared for by their community that really made a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"rVZUAWgtAFijHNuRNP\" style=\"display:none\">Trees for Charity runs for two weeks, and after the installation, Tauranga Crossing will donate each tree to families in need across the region, along with a $500 Pak\u2019nSave voucher.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\" Tauranga Crossing's Trees for Charity initiative will donate 30 decorated trees to families in need this Christmas.\" class=\"article-media__image responsively-lazy\" data-test-ui=\"article-media__image\"\/> Tauranga Crossing&#8217;s Trees for Charity initiative will donate 30 decorated trees to families in need this Christmas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rVZUAWgtAFijHNuRNP\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe felt it was important to spread a little extra joy and support families who are finding things tough right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"rVZUAWgtAFijHNuRNP\" style=\"display:none\">Tauranga Community Foodbank has had a 16% increase in the number of people needing food support compared with the previous 12 months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rVZUAWgtAFijHNuRNP\" style=\"display:none\">On average, 770 households each month sought support with food.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rVZUAWgtAFijHNuRNP\" style=\"display:none\">A total of 9520 kai packages were distributed over the past 12 months, assisting 23,618 people \u2013 about half of them children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rVZUAWgtAFijHNuRNP\" style=\"display:none\">Stretton said food insecurity was a \u201cgrowing issue\u201d across the Bay of Plenty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rVZUAWgtAFijHNuRNP\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt affects more people than we realise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"rVZUAWgtAFijHNuRNP\" style=\"display:none\">She said the Crossing had an opportunity to highlight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/bay-of-plenty-times\/news\/2024-christmas-appeal-raises-record-breaking-300000-for-tauranga-foodbank\/N525BAGHWBC3HFDJ4OGGI7DTKI\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/bay-of-plenty-times\/news\/2024-christmas-appeal-raises-record-breaking-300000-for-tauranga-foodbank\/N525BAGHWBC3HFDJ4OGGI7DTKI\/\">the incredible work being done by the Tauranga Community Foodbank<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rVZUAWgtAFijHNuRNP\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cRaising awareness is the first step toward driving meaningful change and, at Christmas especially, it\u2019s about reminding people that even small acts of generosity can have a big impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"rVZUAWgtAFijHNuRNP\" style=\"display:none\">Tauranga Crossing encouraged visitors to the centre to drop off non-perishable food donations for the foodbank at the Level 1 collection point until Christmas Eve.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\" Tauranga Community Foodbank general manager Nicki Goodwin said the foodbank does the very best it can with what the community provides. Photo \/ Kaitlyn Morrell<\/p>\n<p class=\"rVZUAWgtAFijHNuRNP\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cEven small contributions, like pantry staples or personal care items, make a huge difference for families doing it tough this Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"rVZUAWgtAFijHNuRNP\" style=\"display:none\">Tauranga Community Foodbank\u2019s general manager, Nicki Goodwin, said the lead-up to Christmas was always their busiest time of year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rVZUAWgtAFijHNuRNP\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe\u2019re supporting hundreds of families, many with children who are struggling to cover even the basics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"rVZUAWgtAFijHNuRNP\" style=\"display:none\">Goodwin said she would meet a lot of people who were on their own and struggling every week to get by.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rVZUAWgtAFijHNuRNP\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cChristmas can be a very lonely and tough time.
