Experts are warning that common symptoms like headaches, muscle tension, or irritability may indicate a more concerning issue \u2014 chronic stress.<\/p>\n<p>We spoke to Dr Michael Zemenides, co-founder of the A\u2013Z General Practice at The Wellington Hospital, part of HCA Healthcare UK, who explained what chronic stress means and how to recognise it early. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inyourarea.co.uk\/news\/stressed-out-the-fact-we-only-spend-32-minutes-a-day-outdoors-could-be-to-blame\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stress is a normal reaction<\/a> to change or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inyourarea.co.uk\/news\/prediabetes-what-it-means-and-how-to-reverse-type-2-risk\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">life challenges<\/a>,\u201d he said. \u201cA little bit of stress can help us stay productive \u2014 for instance, before a deadline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Dr Zemenides warned that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inyourarea.co.uk\/news\/5-ways-stress-affects-your-body-and-what-to-do-about-it\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chronic stress occurs<\/a> when the body remains in a prolonged state of alertness. \u201cThis happens when we\u2019re continuously overstimulated by ongoing pressures rather than short-term challenges,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>READ MOREIs chronic stress a medical diagnosis?<\/p>\n<p>While chronic stress isn\u2019t an official <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inyourarea.co.uk\/news\/tag\/health\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">medical diagnosis<\/a>, it is recognised as a serious condition by healthcare professionals. \u201cIt can coexist with or contribute to anxiety, depression, insomnia, or burnout,\u201d said Zemenides.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors assess <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inyourarea.co.uk\/news\/this-is-how-stress-affects-different-parts-of-the-body\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chronic stress<\/a> by reviewing symptoms, lifestyle factors, and physical indicators like blood pressure or hormone levels. Understanding the underlying causes is vital for preventing long-term health complications.<\/p>\n<p>Seven key signs of chronic stress<\/p>\n<p>Racing heart and high blood pressure: \u201cStress triggers a fight-or-flight response, releasing hormones like cortisol and adrenaline,\u201d explained Zemenides. \u201cThis can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inyourarea.co.uk\/news\/cardiologist-points-out-5-things-youre-doing-that-harm-your-heart\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cause your heart to race<\/a> and your blood pressure to rise abnormally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Muscle tension or pain: \u201cOngoing stress keeps muscles in a semi-contracted state, particularly around the neck, shoulders, and back,\u201d he said. Join our WhatsApp Communit\"\/><\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Digestive issues: \u201cWhen stressed, the body diverts energy away from digestion,\u201d explained Zemenides. \u201cThis slows digestion, leading to bloating as gut bacteria produce more gas during the process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Constant anxiety or irritability: \u201cChronic stress often affects emotions, causing irritability, anger, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inyourarea.co.uk\/news\/how-to-spot-the-signs-of-depression-when-youre-over-50\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">feelings of hopelessness<\/a>,\u201d said Zemenides. \u201cIt can also impact your ability to make clear decisions and maintain relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Skin rashes: Stress-related hormonal and inflammatory changes can worsen skin conditions. \u201cThese reactions can trigger sensitivity, hives, or rashes in some people,\u201d Zemenides added.<\/p>\n<p>Changes in appetite: Prolonged stress can disrupt eating habits and metabolism. \u201cSome people lose their appetite, while others turn to binge-eating for comfort,\u201d said Zemenides.<\/p>\n<p>When to seek professional help<\/p>\n<p>Dr Zemenides advises <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inyourarea.co.uk\/news\/struggling-with-stress-anxiety-depression-you-could-be-eligible-for-monthly-support\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">seeking medical advice<\/a> if these symptoms persist or interfere with daily life. \u201cIf headaches, palpitations, insomnia, or digestive issues aren\u2019t improving, it\u2019s time to speak with your GP,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He also recommends keeping a stress diary before your appointment: \u201cTracking triggers, stress levels, and symptoms in real time helps us understand the connection between stress and your physical health.&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Chronic stress can manifest in subtle but serious ways that shouldn\u2019t be ignored.
