On the right the same pub can be seen with the flood waters now resided, there is a white car in front with residue from the floods along with black and white warning tape.\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>Reuters | BBC<\/p>\n<p>Flood waters have started to recede since Monmouth&#8217;s River Monnow reached record levels on Saturday<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">People are rallying together to help householders and businesses hit by unprecedented flooding in Monmouth, according to the local MP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;This community is incredibly resilient and kind,&#8221; said Catherine Fookes, as the town&#8217;s leisure centre has been open to people evacuated from their properties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">A church is also acting as a drop-off point for donations including clothes, and local businesses have been providing hot food.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">A <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c74jevlv19go\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">major incident<\/a> declaration early on Saturday was rescinded on Sunday afternoon, the fire service said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">And all four of the most severe flood warnings &#8211; meaning a &#8220;significant risk to life&#8221; &#8211; were also removed by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">On Saturday, the River Monnow reached record levels &#8211; exceeding those recorded during Storm Dennis in 2020 and Storm Bert in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The Welsh government has paid tribute to the emergency response and said help was available to people affected from local authorities via its<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.wales\/emergency-financial-assistance-bellwin-scheme-local-authorities-html\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> Emergency Financial Assistance Scheme<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Fookes said it was a &#8220;really worrying time now for residents and businesses&#8221; and, while the &#8220;big clear up&#8221; continued, its existing flood defences would need to be reconsidered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;The flood defences did hold in a similar situation in 2020 but this flood, this amount of water, coming very fast in a short space of hours, was most definitely unprecedented,&#8221; she told <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sounds\/play\/m002m7q8\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">BBC Radio Wales&#8217; Sunday Supplement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;I do think now with climate change and, with the amount of big weather events that we&#8217;re getting, that we do have to relook at flood defences.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The clean-up continues on Sunday in Monmouth<\/p>\n<p>Two rivers burst their banks flooding streets and fields in Monmouth<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">She said she would be seeking &#8220;more money for residents and more money for the clean-up, but also more money for those flood defences&#8221;, with flooding also at Abergavenny and nearby Skenfrith village which has been &#8220;flooded every single year for the past five years&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">She said people had come to Monmouth leisure centre offering to help families in need, including looking after pets. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Monmouthshire council&#8217;s Ian Chandler spoke of the upset for people in Skenfrith, a village of just 22 houses. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;The water level was the highest we&#8217;ve ever seen,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;The surge of water was so strong it got over the flood defences and knocked over tables.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;Some people are resigned to it, others are despairing as there seems no way out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1762860669_614_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/b2a23d20-c2ed-11f0-8456-eff94716b162.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Two photos of Jenny Chuter and Simon Morre surveying the damage inside their stores. Items can be seen on shelves but also on the floor.\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Gift shop owner Jenny Chuter and pharmacy manager Simon Morre say their businesses have been hard hit by the floods<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Gift shop owner Jenny Chuter said crafts made by some of the 80 local artists she worked with had been damaged in the floods, which have also &#8220;devastated&#8221; her shop in Monmouth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;It was heartbreaking walking in and seeing all my artists&#8217; and crafters&#8217; work which was floating about,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;Many hours of hard work has gone into this work that had been destroyed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">She said they had since &#8220;got their kit out and they&#8217;re making more for us for Christmas&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;Hopefully we will be open by the weekend and we&#8217;ll get some Christmas presents out to all the customers,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It&#8217;s a disaster&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Pharmacy manager Simon Morre was unable to get inside his store until Sunday morning despite arriving on the scene at 04:00 on Saturday after being alerted by its alarms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve got people&#8217;s prescriptions due tomorrow [but] we&#8217;ve got no power, half the stock has been ruined, half the scripts [prescriptions] have been ruined.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;Head office has been informed and there is contingency planning for that but, at the moment, we have no idea what is going to happen tomorrow.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">He advised people to call NHS 111 for non-emergency medical advice and support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a disaster. I can&#8217;t reorder stock back in because we have got no computers or power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;The surgery next door has had to relocate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1762860669_614_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/4e67fdc0-c222-11f0-8669-5560f5c90fbe.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Catherine Hall and Susie Martinez and her two young sons in flooded streets in Monmouth\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Monmouth business owner Catherine Hall&#8217;s shop has been flooded and resident Susie Martinez and her sons were rescued by boat in the early hours<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Susie Martinez, 42, described how she and her sons, Louis, nine, and Joey, five, were rescued from their flat in Monmouth on Saturday at 03:30.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;We had to climb out of the window and into a boat,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;It was terrifying.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Business owner Catherine Hall said her shop remained open to customers despite the damage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s six weeks until Christmas and I don&#8217;t know what will happen before then.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s devastating. There&#8217;s thousands and thousands worth of stock gone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Fookes urged shoppers not to stay away from Monmouth while Christmas shopping in the coming weeks to ensure flood-hit businesses did not miss out on trade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;There are businesses open there today so please don&#8217;t just avoid Monmouth for the next six weeks because we will clear up fast,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The Welsh government said flooding has &#8220;devastating impacts&#8221; and it was investing a &#8220;record \u00a377m in flood protection this year alone as part of our commitment to fund improved flood protection to 45,000 homes this Senedd term&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Peter Fox, the Conservative Member of the Senedd (MS) for Monmouth, called on the Welsh government &#8220;to make available whatever support they can&#8221; for residents, businesses and communities impacted by the floods. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said it dealt with more than 80 callouts by Saturday afternoon, with clean-up work continuing on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The Fire Brigades Union (FBU), which represents firefighters, said the incident highlighted the &#8220;immense pressure&#8221; on fire and rescue services, with firefighters being &#8220;stretched to the limit&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Neighbouring crews had to be drafted in to provide support, as well as a host of other agencies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;The scale of the response in Monmouth and elsewhere shows once again just how vital our service is when disasters hit,&#8221; said FBU general secretary Steve Wright.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;But it is also clear that services are under huge strain.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Transport for Wales has advised rail passengers to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.journeycheck.com\/tfwrail\/\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">check before travelling<\/a> with the railway between Newport and Hereford expected to remain closed until at least Tuesday, and limited services between Hereford and Shrewsbury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">It advised customers &#8220;not to travel between Shrewsbury and Newport as we have been unable to source sufficient replacement road transport and cannot guarantee customers will be able to reach their destination&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Flooding has also blocked the line between Blaenau Ffestiniog and Llandudno Junction and it said Conwy Valley Line will remain closed until the end of the day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Elinor Rice,Monmouth and Nicholas Bourne,BBC Wales Reuters | BBC Flood waters have started to recede since Monmouth&#8217;s River&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":139460,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[22],"tags":[273,111,139,69,147],"class_list":{"0":"post-139459","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-environment","8":"tag-environment","9":"tag-new-zealand","10":"tag-newzealand","11":"tag-nz","12":"tag-science"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/139459","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=139459"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/139459\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/139460"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=139459"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=139459"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=139459"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
