Mount Somers Walkway Society President Robert Schikker said Winter is a \u201creal character and he\u2019s been around for a long time\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cBeing retired farmers, we love hard physical work,\u201d Schikker said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s apparently never been to the doctor. I reckon it\u2019s this outdoor work and staying fit that keeps him going.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe all enjoy a day out and bonding with each other, and we love the idea that we are creating something that others can enjoy.\u201d<\/p>\n
DoC Geraldine operations manager Tony Preston said Winter and the Mount Somers Walkway Society are the most productive, passionate, and committed community group he had ever worked with.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs well as Woolshed Creek, they constructed a new walk to Sharplin Falls, funded and managed by them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cPlus, they\u2019ve done an enormous amount of broom and gorse control in the Mt Somers area.\u201d<\/p>\n
Peter Winter, 94, is part of the Mount Somers Walkway Society, founded about 40 years ago.<\/p>\n
DoC ranger Chad Adams said the group, and volunteers such as Winter, were a key partner in the projects his team needs to get done.<\/p>\n
\u201cA lot of the work we do would be very difficult to achieve without them, we see them as one of us,\u201d Adams said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt means we can focus on other areas.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese guys are always \u2018naturing\u2019, there wouldn\u2019t be a day go by when one of these guys isn\u2019t out doing something.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeter\u2019s a classic. He\u2019s amazing at 94 to be going strong and what an inspiration.\u201d<\/p>\n
