Emmy-winning comedy writer and producer Dan McGrath died last week at age 61.<\/p>\n
McGrath, best known for being a writer and producer on \u201cSaturday Night Live,\u201d<\/a> \u201cThe Simpsons,\u201d<\/a> and \u201cKing of the Hill\u201d<\/a> died on Friday, Nov. 14 at NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn, New York.<\/p>\n His sister, Gail Garabadian, confirmed his death to the Hollywood Reporter<\/a>, noting that he suffered from a stroke.<\/p>\n McGrath, who grew up in Brooklyn and attended Regis High School in Manhattan, studied at Harvard University, where he honed his comedy writing skills while working for \u201cThe Harvard Lampoon.\u201d In 1991, he brought his funny jokes and character to the writer\u2019s room at \u201cSNL.\u201d <\/p>\n Scoring a writing credit on 24 episodes, he shares a 1992 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing in a Variety or Music Program for \u201cSNL\u201d with other comedy greats, including Adam Sandler and Rob Schneider.<\/p>\n After leaving Studio 8H, McGrath wrote for 50 episodes of \u201cThe Simpsons\u201d between 1992 and 1994. Some of the more popular episodes he contributed to include \u201cThe Devil and Homer Simpson,\u201d \u201cTime and Punishment,\u201d \u201cBart of Darkness,\u201d \u201cTreehouse of Horror\u201d installments, \u201cBoy-Scoutz \u2019n the Hood,\u201d and \u201cHomer\u2019s Phobia.\u201d <\/p>\n Between 1996 and 1998, he also scored a producing credit on 24 episodes of the iconic animated sitcom. Per the Hollywood Reporter, he was fired twice from the show. Still, in 1997, he and the show\u2019s other writers won the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program for the \u201cHomer\u2019s Phobia.\u201d<\/p>\n From 2003 to 2009, McGrath lent his writing talents on 11 episodes of \u201cKing of the Hill,\u201d which include \u201cFull Metal Dust Jacket\u201d and \u201cThe Minh Who Knew Too Much.\u201d He also earned a producing credit for 28 episodes of that show during that time period.<\/p>\n According to his obituary<\/a>, McGrath is survived by his mother, Eleanor; his brother Michael and wife Caroline; his brother Peter; his sister, Gail; his nephew Dillon; and his nieces Kylie and Emma.
