They want other people to know that they can afford the stuff. They have new things, the latest things, and a constant through-flow of conspicuous consumption.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cPeople who value wealth over that are people who are quietly putting money aside for their future. They have little or no debt. They don\u2019t need the stuff to show off to other people what they do own or do have. It\u2019s a more modest interaction with money, but they\u2019re using money for a more powerful purpose, as they would see it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Ryan is quick to note that there\u2019s \u201cnothing wrong\u201d with buying material possessions \u2013 it makes perfect sense for human beings to want to enjoy the payoff that comes with the fruits of their labour once basic needs are tended to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Still, what you do \u2013 or don\u2019t do &#8211; with your disposable income can say a lot about you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Ryan goes on to present the example of Ingvar Kamprad, late Swedish billionaire and founder of multinational juggernaut Ikea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cWhen he died a few years ago, Ingvar Kamprad was worth $58 billion,\u201d Ryan says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cHe drove a 10-year-old Volvo and lived in the house he\u2019d always lived in. All of his furniture was from Ikea.
