(Google Earth: Data SIO, NOAA, US NAVY, NGA, GEBCO, Image Landsat, Copernicus)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve lost a lot of the diversity on the reef, the complexity,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The coral is providing habitat for fish, for crustaceans, for shells, for worms \u2026 it&#8217;s quite likely they have all died.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Richards said the death of the corals was &#8220;just the beginning&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This summer and all the summers to come over the next decade are incredibly critical for these reefs to recover,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There was some hope, however, with corals in the <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-05\/exmouth-gulf-marine-park-announced-by-wa-government\/105739138\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105739138\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nearby Exmouth Gulf<\/a> showing signs of resilience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Towards the reef&#8217;s southern tip, deep corals at Coral Bay appeared to escape the brunt of the marine heat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Much of the bay&#8217;s inner section was damaged by <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-09-14\/dead-coral-bay-ningaloo-reef-spawning\/101431222\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/101431222\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an anoxic event<\/a> in 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Crucial window ahead<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The creep of rising water temperatures was first detected off WA&#8217;s coast about a year ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Principal research scientist at the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, Tom Holmes, said the summer months were expected to be less severe.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A female scuba diver writes on an underwater clipboard.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/bf5191e5db5c04a7874e5a961a0c8180\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">DBCA&#8217;s Exmouth Gulf marine coordinator Sallyann Gudge surveying sites of coral mortality this week.
