Searchlight Pictures’ new film Rental Family is bringing warm smiles and early praise to theaters this week. Directed by Japanese filmmaker HIKARI, the movie stars Oscar-winner Brendan Fraser in one of his most tender roles yet.

Searchlight has released a new behind-the-scenes featurette that highlights HIKARI’s directing style, her close collaboration with Fraser, and the emotional core of the story. The film officially opens in U.S. theaters on November 21, 2025.

Set in modern Tokyo, Rental Family follows Philip, an American actor drifting through life, played with quiet vulnerability by Fraser. His world changes when he accepts an unusual job at a Japanese “rental family” agency — a service where people can hire actors to pose as loved ones.

As Philip plays stand-in roles for clients, he begins forming real bonds that slowly blur the line between acting and authentic connection. Through these encounters, he rediscovers meaning, belonging, and emotional warmth.

The cast also features Takehiro Hira, Mari Yamamoto, Shannon Gorman, and Akira Emoto.

The new featurette released by Searchlight offers a heartfelt look at how HIKARI approached the project. Crew members describe her as a filmmaker with “strong intuition for the human condition,” who brings sincerity without falling into clichés.

Fraser, meanwhile, expresses admiration for HIKARI’s ability to create a safe, creative environment on set. Their partnership brings a gentle, cozy tone that defines the film.

Rental Family premiered earlier this year at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it earned warm audience reactions for its emotional simplicity and comforting tone. Many viewers described it as a “warm and fuzzy” experience — the kind of film that leaves you smiling as the credits roll.

Searchlight Pictures will release Rental Family nationwide in the U.S. beginning November 21, 2025. With its gentle storytelling and heartfelt performances, it is positioned as one of the season’s most uplifting theatrical releases.

Searchlight Pictures’ new film Rental Family is bringing warm smiles and early praise to theaters this week.
