{"id":145110,"date":"2025-11-20T18:15:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-20T18:15:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/145110\/"},"modified":"2025-11-20T18:15:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T18:15:09","slug":"20-million-years-of-kissing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/145110\/","title":{"rendered":"20 million years of kissing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kissing did not begin with star-crossed human lovers but with the primate ancestors of great apes around 20 million years ago, according to a new study.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from Oxford University and the Florida Institute of Technology wanted to examine when\u00a0kissing began, given that from an evolutionary standpoint it has no obvious survival benefit, and could spread disease.<\/p>\n<p>Yet humans, chimpanzees, bonobos, orangutans, and gorillas all\u00a0kiss, which strongly suggests the habit was inherited from a shared ancestor.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists in the study, published on Wednesday, combined observations of primate behaviour with data on evolutionary relationships, to rewind the clock and try and date the first\u00a0kiss.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Using these two key pieces of information, we employed a modelling approach that allowed us to simulate different evolutionary scenarios,&#8221; said lead author Dr Matilda Brindle of Oxford&#8217;s Department of Biology.<\/p>\n<p>Running the model millions of times put that first smooch at 21.5 to 16.9 million years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The findings were published in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior.<\/p>\n<p>The scientists&#8217; unromantic definition of\u00a0kissing was &#8220;non-aggressive, mouth-to-mouth contact that did not involve food transfer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This included sexual\u00a0kissing as well as platonic\u00a0kisses such as those between family members or in friendly greetings.<\/p>\n<p>How\u00a0kissing emerged remains a subject of debate, as does why it persisted.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Some people suggest sexual\u00a0kissing is a useful way of assessing mate quality or suitability,&#8221; Brindle said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Alternatively,\u00a0kissing could be a type of foreplay, increasing sexual arousal and boosting the chance of fertilisation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Platonic pecks are thought to be used to navigate complex social relationships or increase bonding, she said.<\/p>\n<p>The study argued Neanderthals and humans also likely locked lips, given evidence that they interbred and shared an oral microbe &#8211; a sign they swapped saliva &#8211; long after the two species diverged 450,000 to 750,000 years ago.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Kissing did not begin with star-crossed human lovers but with the primate ancestors of great apes around 20&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":145111,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[26],"tags":[111,139,69,147,406],"class_list":{"0":"post-145110","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-wildlife","8":"tag-new-zealand","9":"tag-newzealand","10":"tag-nz","11":"tag-science","12":"tag-wildlife"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/145110","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=145110"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/145110\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/145111"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=145110"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=145110"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=145110"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
