Billy Bob Thornton’s Tommy Norris once again leaves political correctness at the door in the Texas oil drama Landman and Ed Sheeran is playing music on the streets of New York with the director of Adolescence in tow. If that’s not enough, we take a look at the secret life of one of Britain’s most famous painters, JMW Turner.

Here’s your weekend watchlist …

• Looking for more recommendations from our critics? Ignoring his wife, Libby (Sarah Greene), Bunny leads a life of irresponsible pleasure and grubby sordid deals. However, when tragedy strikes and he’s forced to assume some sort of fatherly role to his bookish young son, Bunny Jr (Rafael Mathé), the dysfunctional pair become embroiled in a truly bizarre and modern gothic tale. Read our full review here.

Landman (Paramount+)

Those familiar with the gun-toting, black gold-digging, politically incorrect world of Landman will be cheered by the news that, in this second season of the glossy Taylor Sheridan show, everything is just as chaotic as it was when we left off. Billy Bob Thornton again lights up the screen as the straight-talking oilman Tommy Norris, a protagonist who somehow manages to retain sympathy from the audience while saying the unsayable. Tommy is now the chairman of M-Tex Oil and, alongside Cami (Demi Moore), is fending off investors while dealing with his dysfunctional family under the looming spectre of a cartel boss. It’s a wild ride so get ready for a rodeo like no other.

• How true to life is Landman? I went to the oilfields of Texas to find out

One Shot with Ed Sheeran — A Music Experience (Netflix)

Fresh from picking up an Emmy for his incredible directorial work on Adolescence, Philip Barantini is back to bring alive an afternoon in the life of the British musical sensation Ed Sheeran. A one-hour, one-shot spectacular, the film follows Sheeran as he makes his way across the Big Apple, guitar in hand, meeting fans and members of the public while playing many of his most famous songs. Music and high-concept TV together at last. You’re in for a treat (unless you don’t like Sheeran, of course).

Turner: The Secret Sketchbooks (iPlayer)

JMW Turner didn’t leave a written diary from which historians could determine his moods and emotions throughout his life. However, he did leave behind more than 37,000 watercolours, drawings and sketches that give a fascinating insight into his life and times. This show uses contributions from a starry panel of guests — from Tracey Emin and Ronnie Wood to Timothy Spall, who played Turner in a 2014 film — to unpick the painter’s thoughts and feelings on a number of subjects, from his mentally ill mother to the rigid class establishment of the time. Read our full review here.

• Read more TV reviews, guides about what to watch and interviews

Daddy Issues (iPlayer)

Since the first series of this BBC comedy aired in 2024, its star Aimee Lou Wood has been catapulted to international fame after her turn in series three of The White Lotus opposite Walton Goggins. The show explores the complex father-daughter relationship between the pregnant Gemma (Wood) and her recently divorced father, Malcolm (David Morrissey), when they end up living together in his Stockport flatshare.
