{"id":148543,"date":"2025-11-22T19:29:15","date_gmt":"2025-11-22T19:29:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/148543\/"},"modified":"2025-11-22T19:29:15","modified_gmt":"2025-11-22T19:29:15","slug":"cop31-un-climate-talks-set-for-turkey-in-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/148543\/","title":{"rendered":"COP31 UN climate talks set for Turkey in 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BELEM, Brazil (AP) \u2014 Turkey will host next year\u2019s annual U.N. climate talks but Australia will preside over the discussions under a compromise in which Australia withdrew from the running to be the venue, the Australian climate minister said.<\/p>\n<p>The 2026 talks will be held in the Turkish resort city of Antalya, Australia\u2019s Climate and Energy Minister Chris Bowen said after his country withdrew its bid late Wednesday to be the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/climate-change-cop30-united-nations-belem-brazil-7e89a69bac07888697a7654ab5407d67\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.N. conference<\/a> venue, this year hosted by Brazil. Next year\u2019s region is the Western European and Others Group, which includes both Turkey and Australia \u2014 the two countries that had been vying to be host. <\/p>\n<p>David Ritter, who leads Greenpeace Australia Pacific, said the arrangement to split the venue and presiding officer between two countries was \u201chighly unusual,\u201d and that he hoped it wouldn\u2019t diminish the conference mission. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever the forum, whoever the president, the urgency and focus cannot change, and phasing out fossil fuels and ending deforestation must be at the core of the COP31 agenda,\u201d Ritter said.<\/p>\n<p>A representative of small Pacific island nations said his group had hoped that Australia would be the host country to give his region more of a voice. <\/p>\n<p>Steven Victor, the minister of agriculture, fisheries and environment of Palau, told The Associated Press on Thursday that the coalition of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/climate-change-united-nations-general-assembly-lifestyle-business-environment-and-nature-b46559e9a86f2f6873a5c45f2a83b811\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">small-island developing states<\/a> in the Pacific \u2014 which are among the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/united-nations-general-assembly-drowning-island-nations-75f5390daf98d1d385da7dd4a869ae09\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">most climate vulnerable countries in the world<\/a> \u2014 are still trying to understand how this new arrangement will be implemented.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not something we wanted to see happen, but at least we still have some level of voice in it,\u201d Victor said. \u201cWe need to figure out how to amplify that voice and influence the process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00dcmit Sahin, head of Climate Policy Program at the Istanbul Policy Center at Sabanc\u0131 University, said \u201cthe climate talks at Antalya will be unique in many ways. It\u2019ll be a Mediterranean COP, a Middle Eastern COP, a COP with a Pacific dimension all at once.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Sahin said that Turkey has sometimes been a bridge between developed and developing countries. He added Turkey will need to carefully navigate its close ties with major oil producers Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan as it begins preparations for hosting the talks. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese relationships warrant careful scrutiny, as they could shape the impartiality, ambition, and integrity of conference outcomes,\u201d Sahin said.<\/p>\n<p>Ethiopia was announced as host for COP32 earlier this week.
