Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter\u00a0posted on Friday that actor Noah Centineo<\/a> (To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, Street Fighter) is currently in talks to join the cast of\u00a0Sunrise and Legendary Pictures<\/a>‘ live-action Gundam<\/a>\u00a0film<\/a>.\u00a0Centineo will play<\/a> Ken in Legendary Pictures’ new live-action film<\/a> of CAPCOM<\/a>‘s Street Fighter fighting game series.<\/p>\n

Deadline\u00a0 wrote<\/a> in March that Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Immaculate) was in final talks to star in the film.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Bandai Namco Holdings<\/a> USA Inc. established<\/a> a wholly-owned subsidiary named Bandai Namco Filmworks<\/a> America, LLC on April 1, under the control of Bandai Namco Filmworks. The new subsidiary’s goal is to expand foreign licensing business and brand management, ahead of the planned live-action film. Bandai Namco Filmworks and Legendary Pictures signed a joint investment agreement for the film in January.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Deadline reported<\/a> in October 2024 that Jim Mickle (Sweet Tooth showrunner) is writing and directing the film<\/a>. Mickle is also producing the film with partner Linda Moran through their Nightshade company.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jordan Vogt-Roberts<\/a> (Kong: Skull Island<\/a>) was previously announced<\/a> as the director and an executive producer for the film, and comic book author Brian K. Vaughan<\/a> (Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Runaways) was originally slated to write the script and serve as an executive producer. Makoto Asanuma<\/a> was previously credited as an executive producer. Mary Parent<\/a> (vice chair of Worldwide Production for Legendary), Legendary’s Cale Boyter<\/a> (Pok\u00e9mon Detective Pikachu<\/a> and Dune producer), and Sunrise’s Naohiroshi Ogata<\/a> were listed to produce. Netflix<\/a> was previously announced to stream the film worldwide and had shared concept art in November 2021.<\/p>\n

Napton and Sunrise Executive Expert for film production Ken Iyadomi<\/a> revealed<\/a> at a talk at a Project Anime industry presentation in March 2019, that the Gundam Unicorn<\/a>‘s cameo in Pacific Rim: Uprising helped create the relationships between Sunrise and Legendary Pictures, and set the scene for talks about a Gundam film project. Iyadomi said that although contacting the right people for the deal was difficult, the CEO of Sunrise was very easy to convince. Another factor that made the negotiations easier was that Legendary had less people, so decisions could be made quicker.<\/p>\n

Boyter appeared<\/a> with Bandai Namco Holdings president and representative director Mitsuaki Taguchi<\/a> at Anime Expo<\/a> in July 2018 to announce the adaptation. Robert Napton<\/a>, former Bandai Entertainment<\/a> Director of Marketing and Legendary Comics’ current Senior Vice President of Publishing, moderated the panel segment about the live-action film project.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The “Gundam Franchise’s New Work Unveiling” event in April 2018 had listed<\/a> a tentatively titled Mobile Suit Gundam UC2 (Kid\u014d Senshi Gundam<\/a> UC2) project that would have an “overseas drama” format. The listing said the project takes place in Universal Calendar 0104 and would launch in 2022. After showing the listing at the April 2018 event, the Sunrise Studio<\/a>‘s emcee and one of the event’s guests, Gundam Unicorn novelist Harutoshi Fukui<\/a>, quickly told the audience to “pretend you didn’t see that” visual.<\/p>\n
