are melting Antarctica&#8217;s &#8216;Doomsday Glacier&#8217; from below, a concerning new study warns.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Much like hurricanes above land, the swirling vortexes are formed in the open ocean when waters of different temperatures and densities collide.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They travel towards\u00a0Antarctica where they melt\u00a0the Doomsday Glacier, officially known as\u00a0Thwaites Glacier, as well as the\u00a0Pine Island glacier, both in West Antarctica.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Study author Mattia Poinelli at the University of <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/california\/index.html\" id=\"mol-ef7a67d0-c93d-11f0-80bf-35270c060d95\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">California<\/a>, Irvine, said the vortexes &#8216;look exactly like a storm&#8217; simulations from computer modeling as well as moored devices, which provided high\u2013resolution observations below the ice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The experts found evidence of the\u00a0storm\u2013like circulation patterns beneath the ice shelves \u2013 the floating extensions of glaciers that have flowed from land out onto the ocean surface.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">These swirling ocean currents are called &#8216;submesoscale&#8217; meaning they measure between 0.6 and 6.2 miles across (1 and 10 kilometres).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They regularly form in the open ocean, propagate towards the\u00a0Doomsday Glacier, intrude its cavity, and then aggressively melt the ice from below.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">According to the experts, the storms draw up deeper, warmer water from the ocean&#8217;s depths into the\u00a0cavity while pushing away colder freshwater.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">More ice shelf melting generates more ocean turbulence, which in turn causes yet more ice shelf melting \u2013 something of a vicious cycle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The process is &#8216;ubiquitous&#8217; year\u2013round, occurring regardless of the season, although the team found elevated activity in June.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;In the same way hurricanes and other large storms threaten vulnerable coastal regions around the world, submesoscale features in the open ocean propagate toward ice shelves to cause substantial damage,&#8217;
