John Eimen, the former child actor known for his work on popular TV shows like Leave It to Beaver, Petticoat Junction, and The Twilight Zone, died Friday at his home in Mukilteo, Wash. He was 76.<\/p>\n

A family representative confirmed the news to Entertainment Weekly and said the cause was prostate cancer.<\/p>\n

As a child star, Eimen worked with some of the most legendary performers of the classic Hollywood era, including Robert Stack, Jackie Coogan, Barbara Billingsley, and a pre-presidential Ronald Reagan. By the time he was 18, Eimen had already racked up more screen credits than some actors earn in a lifetime.<\/p>\n

Born Oct. 2, 1949, in Chicago, Eimen got his big break by sheer coincidence. After the Eimen family moved to the San Gabriel Valley area of Los Angeles, he was discovered by a friend of his first-grade teacher, who turned out to be a children’s talent agent.<\/p>\n

“She often came by the school, and she and my teacher often went out after school for dinner or something,” Eimen recalled in 2020<\/a>. “She saw me at school, and at that time, I had bright, ridiculously bright red hair and the freckles, a really real all-American boy-type kid, six years old. She asked my teacher if maybe she could contact my parents and see about representing me.”<\/p>\n

His debut role was a classmate of Jerry Mathers’ Theodore “Beaver” Cleaver on the classic sitcom Leave It to Beaver. Eimen appeared in the series’ pilot episode in 1957, and reprised his role several times throughout its six-season run.<\/p>\n

From the late 1950s through the late 1960s, the span of his adolescence, Eimen took on roles of varying sizes in series like The\u00a0Twilight Zone, The\u00a0Untouchables, Bachelor Father, Wagon\u00a0Train, Petticoat Junction, The Lloyd Bridges\u00a0Show, Going My Way, and General Electric Theater.<\/p>\n

While much of his work consisted of walk-on, uncredited, or single-episode parts, he did appear in a sizable role as Cadet Monk Roberts on the first season of the sitcom\u00a0McKeever and the\u00a0Colonel.<\/p>\n

Eimen appeared poised for another big break when he was cast as the son of Oscar winner Jane Wyman in a drama series slated for TV in 1961 called Dr. Kate, but it didn’t come to pass.<\/p>\n

“With a sponsor in place, this show had the possibility to run for\u00a0many\u00a0years, considering Ms. Wyman’s status as an Academy Award-winning actress,” Eimen recalled.\u00a0“However, she backed out of\u00a0the deal, claiming dissatisfaction with the proposed\u00a0‘after-prime time’ schedule slot in the channel lineup.” The pilot was instead retconned into a TV movie for the anthology series Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse, produced by Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.<\/p>\n

Beyond Hollywood, Eimen transitioned to writing and recording and music and, after moving to Japan, spent a decade teaching English. He also worked as a flight attendant for more than two decades. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Midori; two adult sons, Daniel and Chris; and grandsons Lucas and Oliver.<\/p>\n
