This supplement can ease seasonal depression"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Feeling down is trending up. <\/p>\n<p>The days are getting colder and shorter, and instances of <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/02\/03\/health\/3-easy-ways-to-fight-winter-depression-and-when-to-seek-help\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">seasonal depression<\/a> are on the rise.<\/p>\n<p>Starting as early as November, those who struggle with seasonal depression have little sunlight to brighten their spirits on dark days.<\/p>\n<p>Formally known as seasonal affective disorder (or, appropriately, SAD), seasonal depression is spurred by the change of the season, most commonly during the fall and winter months, when daylight wanes, sleep is disrupted and isolation increases.<\/p>\n<p>Seasonal depression is believed to affect\u00a0about 5% of Americans each year. SB Arts Media \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeasonal depression is thought to be caused by changes in your body\u2019s internal clock or circadian rhythm,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/drjudithjoseph\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Dr. Judith Joseph<\/a>, a board-certified psychiatrist, researcher and bestselling author of\u00a0<a data-aps-asc-tag=\"nypost-20\" data-aps-asin=\"0316577294\" data-wrapped-template=\"https:\/\/r.nypostlink.com?btn_ref=org-19984c113c692001&amp;btn_url\" href=\"https:\/\/r.nypostlink.com?btn_ref=org-19984c113c692001&amp;btn_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FHigh-Functioning-Overcome-Depression-Reclaim%2Fdp%2F0316577294%3Ftag%3Dnypost-20%26asc_refurl%3Dhttps%3A%2F%2Fnypost.com%2F2025%2F11%2F21%2Fhealth%2Fsad-and-tired-this-supplement-can-ease-seasonal-depression%2F%26asc_source%3Dweb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cHigh Functioning,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Sunlight passing through the retina helps regulate bodily functions like mood and sleep.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph explained that diminishing sunlight in the fall and winter disrupts those processes, alters melatonin production and can induce feelings of sluggishness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis may lead to changes in mood and anxiety,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Seasonal depression is believed to affect\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2017\/02\/08\/the-real-reason-you-get-depressed-in-winter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">about 5% of Americans each year.<\/a> Symptoms include increased appetite, social isolation and cravings for junk food.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph notes that symptoms of seasonal depression can be amplified by vitamin D deficiency.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/11\/02\/lifestyle\/are-you-getting-enough-vitamin-d-5-signs-you-may-be-deficient\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vitamin D<\/a>, also known as the \u201csunshine vitamin,\u201d is responsible for helping the body maintain its immune system, absorb calcium and fortify muscles and nerves.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms of seasonal depression can be amplified by vitamin D deficiency. Cozine \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>Yet <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/15050-vitamin-d-vitamin-d-deficiency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">research shows<\/a> that 35% of Americans aren\u2019t getting enough, especially in the winter months.<\/p>\n<p>The body naturally converts sunlight to vitamin D, so during seasons of limited sunlight, the D takes a dip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVitamin D tends to be impacted by lower sunlight exposure,\u201d Joseph said. \u201cSometimes I treat my patients with a combination of a vitamin D supplement, light therapy and behavioral therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A 2020 study <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32365423\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">in the journal Depression and Anxiety\u00a0<\/a>found that supplementation with vitamin D reduced negative emotions in those with low vitamin D levels or major depressive disorder.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Joseph recommends pairing the sunshine vitamin with actual sunlight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my clients with vitamin D\u00a0deficiency,\u00a0I recommend vitamin D supplements and encourage them to try to get fresh sunlight in the morning to reset their biological clocks,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She also advises a diet rich in vitamins and minerals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFoods like fatty fish, leafy greens and eggs are rich\u00a0in both vitamin D and magnesium,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph typically prescribes vitamin D in tandem <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/08\/26\/health\/nutrition-doctor-reveals-magnesium-supplement-pros-and-cons\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">with magnesium<\/a> \u201cbecause the body needs magnesium to activate and regulate vitamin D, so that it can be used by the body appropriately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to supplements, it\u2019s essential to discuss them with a healthcare professional to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/04\/11\/health\/5-vitamins-that-you-definitely-dont-want-to-overdose-on\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">avoid taking too many<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Judith Joseph typically prescribes vitamin D in tandem with magnesium. Courtesy of Dr. Judith<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have heard of people taking too many vitamins without a physician monitoring them and then developing toxicity,\u201d Joseph said. \u201cThis can be true with excessive vitamin D ingestion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, too much vitamin D can cause hypercalcemia \u2014 an overabundance of calcium in the bloodstream \u2014 which can weaken bones, cause kidney stones and hinder heart and brain function.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminD-HealthProfessional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">National Institutes of Health<\/a>\u00a0recommends 600 international units of vitamin D a day for adults up to 69 years old and 800 IU for older adults.<\/p>\n<p>For its part,\u00a0the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9399608\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">notes there are \u201cdisagreements\u201d<\/a>\u00a0about dosage but recommends 200 IU up to age 50, 400 IU for people 51 to 70 and 600 IU for adults even older.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to moderate vitamin D supplementation, experts recommend that patients prone to seasonal depression engage in daily aerobic exercise to help offset their mood, maintain a structured schedule and invest in lamps that mimic natural sunlight.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also been suggested that <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/04\/15\/people-are-mass-purchasing-plants-during-quarantine\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">having plants in your space <\/a>can uplift moods.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, if you\u2019re staring into the dark abyss, it might be time to get yourself a succulent.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Feeling down is trending up.
