\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAndre Heimgartner’s engine expired during the final minutes of qualifying for Friday’s Supercars race at the BP Adelaide Grand Final.<\/p>\n

The Brad Jones Racing driver was second-fastest in the first leg of qualifying behind Dick Johnson Racing\u2019s Brodie Kostecki.<\/p>\n

On what would prove to be his final flying lap, oil began pouring from beneath Heimgartner\u2019s car approaching Turn 13.<\/p>\n

Despite smoke entering the cockpit, the Kiwi kept pushing until he couldn\u2019t any more and pulled off to the right on the front straight.<\/p>\n

Though the engine failure will come at a cost, Heimgartner did not think twice about letting off even as it exploded.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a decent lap there and then coming out of (Turn) 11 I just heard a vibration, a massive vibration,\u201d Heimgartner said on the Fox Sports broadcast.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought Brad would want me to lift off, but I just held it flat,\u201d he laughed. \u201cHoping to get through the last corner, but it let go.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heimgartner wound up qualifying 10th, with his nearest teammate Bryce Fullwood in 18th.<\/p>\n

He heaped praise on his race engineer Tony Woodward for the uptick in performance.<\/p>\n

\u201cReally sucks. We had a fast car, did a good job tuning it,\u201d said Heimgartner.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would have been a good result there, which this year has been hard to come by.<\/p>\n

\u201cReally happy with how Tony and the whole crew has tuned the car, how we\u2019ve prepared. The car speed we had.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt just wasn\u2019t meant to be today. Still 10th, so we\u2019ll see what we\u2019ve got in the race and see if we can mix it up. The car\u2019s fast, so that\u2019s good.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time of the interview, Heimgartner\u2019s car had not returned to the pit lane \u2013 though a replacement engine was already on standby.<\/p>\n

The team is in a race to complete the engine transplanted in time for Friday afternoon\u2019s race, which begins at 4:20pm ACDT.<\/p>\n
