Lilly Wachowski, the co-director and co-writer of \u201cThe Matrix\u201d franchise, hit back at MAGA members co-opting the \u201cred pill\u201d concept from her movies for their political messaging.<\/p>\n

The filmmaker addressed the situation on Thursday\u2019s episode of the \u201cSo True with Caleb Hearon\u201d podcast, where she noted she wasn\u2019t surprised by MAGA\u2019s decision to take on \u201cThe Matrix\u201d moment since \u201cright-wing ideology appropriates absolutely everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey appropriate left-wing points of view and they mutate them for their own propaganda, for their own to obfuscate what the real message is,\u201d she added. \u201cThis is what fascism does. And so, of course, that\u2019s going to happen.\u201d <\/p>\n

MAGA voices have reworked the \u201cred pill\u201d moment from \u201cThe Matrix\u201d by suggesting the film scene, where Neo (Keanu Reeves) breaks free from the simulated world thanks to the aforementioned pill, is a metaphor for waking up from political compulsion.<\/p>\n

Wachowski further noted: \u201cThey take these ideas that are generally acknowledged as questions or investigations or truisms about humanity and life and they turn them to something else so that they remove the weight of what those things represent.\u201d<\/p>\n

That being said, Wachowski made it clear she isn\u2019t trying to stop people from using her \u201cred pill\u201d metaphor, explaining she can\u2019t control the way people choose to interpret her work.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to let go of your work,\u201d she said. \u201cPeople are gonna interpret it however they interpret it. I look at all of the crazy, mutant theories around \u2018The Matrix\u2019 films and the crazy ideologies that those films helped create and I just go, \u2018What are you doing?! No! That\u2019s wrong!\u2019 But I have to let it go \u2026 You\u2019re never gonna be able to make absolutely every person believe what you initially intended.\u201d<\/p>\n
