Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) says seven additional people were treated at the scene but did not require transport to hospital.  <\/p>\n<p>BCEHS said it received a call at 1:46 p.m. PT Thursday about an \u201canimal attack\u201d on a trail called &#8220;Old Trail,&#8221; near Highway 20. Conservation Officer Service&#8217;s (BCCOS) Facebook page, Insp. Kevin Van Damme said the attack resulted in injuries to three children and one adult.<\/p>\n<p>The school group had stopped along a trail near the community for lunch when the grizzly emerged from the forest and attacked, Van Damme said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Teachers successfully repelled the bear using pepper spray and a bear banger,&#8221; Van Damme said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"An up-close picture of a B.C. (Harman\/CBC)<\/p>\n<p>Conservation officers have been on scene with RCMP since Thursday, and have ordered residents to stay out of the forested and river area near the 4 Mile area until further notice.<\/p>\n<p>Van Damme said early information suggests the bear may have been previously injured.<\/p>\n<p>The COS is working on capturing the bear.<\/p>\n<p>The injured individuals were treated at Bella Coola Hospital and are being transported to Vancouver for further care, according to Van Damme.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday BCEHS spokesperson Brian Twaites said the weather conditions in the area were poor, so air transportation was called for from the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.\u00a0  <\/p>\n<p>A Facebook post from Acwsalcta School \u2014 an independent school run by the Nuxalk Nation in Bella Coola, which is about 420 kilometres northwest of\u00a0Vancouver as the crow flies \u2014 said the incident involved students and staff. <\/p>\n<p>The school announced it will be closed Friday due to \u201cthe bear incident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to know what to say during this very difficult time. We are so grateful for our team and our students,\u201d the post said.<\/p>\n<p>20 people on field trip<\/p>\n<p>Nuxalk Nation Chief Samuel Schooner said in a statement that the school group of about 20 people were on a short afternoon field trip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis unprecedented grizzly bear attack occurred without provocation and has resulted in significant trauma to our community,\u201d Schooner said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are incredibly proud of our teachers and students who responded heroically in the moment to protect one another.
