{"id":159791,"date":"2025-11-29T14:55:07","date_gmt":"2025-11-29T14:55:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/159791\/"},"modified":"2025-11-29T14:55:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-29T14:55:07","slug":"phillys-black-art-collectors-have-formed-the-museum-of-african-american-art-collections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/159791\/","title":{"rendered":"Philly\u2019s Black art collectors have formed the Museum of African American Art Collections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">On a recent Thursday evening, Philadelphia art collector William Skeet Jiggetts sat in the foyer of <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/awbury.org\/francis-cope-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/awbury.org\/francis-cope-house\/\">Awbury Arboretum\u2019s Francis Cope House<\/a> surrounded by grand collages taken from the walls of his East Falls home. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The art \u2014 all made by living artists and friends of Jiggetts \u2014 is striking. A framed paper and antique lace dress by textile artist Rosalind \u201cNzinga\u201d Vaughn-Nicole sits next to portrait-size cameos that mixed media artist <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/artistdaniellescott.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/artistdaniellescott.com\/\">Danielle Scott<\/a> fashioned from newspapers and other found objects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Jiggetts, 57, an art collector for more than 30 years, has had pieces from his collection on display in small shows, but never in his wildest dreams did he think that they would anchor an exhibition \u2014 in a traveling museum that he founded. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">But here he was, at the opening reception for the inaugural<a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.maaac.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.maaac.org\/\"> exhibition of the Museum of African American Art Collections<\/a>. Pieces from the art collections of <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.maaac.org\/diana-tyson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.maaac.org\/diana-tyson\">Diana Tyson<\/a>, <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.maaac.org\/stephanie-a-daniel-collection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.maaac.org\/stephanie-a-daniel-collection\">Stephanie A. Daniel<\/a>, and gallerist couple <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.maaac.org\/moody-jones-collection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.maaac.org\/moody-jones-collection\">Adrian Moody and Robyn Jones<\/a> were also on display. <\/p>\n<p>Collector-centric art<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Museums routinely curate exhibitions centering collectors\u2019 works to celebrate and cultivate existing and potential donor relationships. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Some recent examples include the African American Museum  in Philadelphia\u2019s show drawing from actress <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/columnists\/cch-pounder-aamp-portraits-shared-visions-20250206.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/columnists\/cch-pounder-aamp-portraits-shared-visions-20250206.html\">CCH Pounder\u2019s substantial collection<\/a> and the Michener Art Museum\u2019s show <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/michenerartmuseum.org\/exhibition\/yesterdays-dreams-are-real-collecting-black-art-and-the-legacy-of-lewis-tanner-moore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/michenerartmuseum.org\/exhibition\/yesterdays-dreams-are-real-collecting-black-art-and-the-legacy-of-lewis-tanner-moore\/\">honoring the legacy of collector Lewis Tanner Moore<\/a>, the great-nephew of 19th-century painter Henry Ossawa Tanner. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">While the Barnes Foundation houses the late chemist and art collector Albert C. Barnes\u2019 collection, there are very few other \u2014 if any \u2014 museums whose walls are solely dedicated to the collections of collectors. Nomadic, traveling museums, at that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cIt got to the point where I had more art than walls,\u201d Jiggetts said looking over his black-framed glasses. \u201cNobody saw it \u2026 I didn\u2019t even see it. I thought, \u2018Wouldn\u2019t it be cool for a bunch of collectors to get together and create a space to show our work. Tell our story?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cThere is a treasure trove of African American art in our living rooms, in our reading rooms, and in our dens that need to be shared,\u201d Jiggetts said. \u201cThe Museum of African American Art Collections is a forum to host these collections and tell the stories that come with them.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Jiggetts got the itch to show his collection in the early 2020s after talking with colleagues who wanted to show theirs, too. In 2023 he set up a foundation, started approaching collectors, and began nailing down locations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">That\u2019s how the Museum of African American Art Collections began.<\/p>\n<p>A $200 frame and an obsession<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Jiggetts, who works as a tax accountant, grew up in Germantown and spent Sunday afternoons at the Philadelphia Art Museum gazing at the impressionist works of Manet and Monet. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">When he was in his 20s, he bought a poster of <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vangoghmuseum.nl\/en\/collection\/s0031v1962\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.vangoghmuseum.nl\/en\/collection\/s0031v1962\">Vincent van Gogh\u2019s Sunflowers<\/a>. \u201cI spent $200 of 1989 money on that frame,\u201d he said with a laugh. That purchase marked the beginning of an obsession. He bought his first piece of original art from Germantown painter Lucien Crump Jr., who, according to a 2006 Inquirer obituary, owned the first gallery in the city dedicated to Black art. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Jiggetts scoured galleries and festivals for original art, buying any piece that tickled his fancy for under $500. In the early 2000s, his mentors \u2014 well known Philadelphia appraiser<a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.artadvisors.org\/art-advisor-directory\/p\/barbara-wallace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.artadvisors.org\/art-advisor-directory\/p\/barbara-wallace\"> Barbara Wallace<\/a> and the late African American <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.culturetype.com\/2020\/06\/11\/ronald-ollie-69-a-major-collector-of-african-american-abstract-art-who-gifted-81-works-to-saint-louis-art-museum-has-died\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.culturetype.com\/2020\/06\/11\/ronald-ollie-69-a-major-collector-of-african-american-abstract-art-who-gifted-81-works-to-saint-louis-art-museum-has-died\/\">collector Ronald Ollie<\/a> \u2014 urged him to start evaluating his choices and he became a serious art collector. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cI figured out what it was I really liked,\u201d Jiggetts said, describing his favorite pieces as ones that marry impressionist and abstract art, like the ones on display at Awbury Arboretum. \u201cI realized I enjoyed the experience of buying art as much as the art. I like the company of artists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">His collection is comprised of mostly living artists like the mixed media artist Danielle Scott; abstract painter <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.benfjones.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.benfjones.net\/\">Ben F. Jones<\/a>; and <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paulgoodnight.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.paulgoodnight.com\/\">Paul Goodnight<\/a>, who is known for his colossal oil paintings featured in the backdrops of TV shows like Seinfeld and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. (Although Jiggetts does have a pencil sketch by the late Bahamian artist <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/purvisyoung.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/purvisyoung.com\/\">Purvis Young<\/a>.) <\/p>\n<p>Keepers of history<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Collectors are the glue that keep the fine arts ecosystem \u2014 artists, patrons, buyers, gallerists, and museum creators \u2014 connected and running. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">They are often patrons of the arts like<a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/arts\/woodmere-museum-new-building-frances-maguire-hall-20251024.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/arts\/woodmere-museum-new-building-frances-maguire-hall-20251024.html\"> James J. Maguire and his late wife, Frances<\/a>, investing in artists and art institutions, building impressive art collections in their homes. Collectors Adrian Moody and Robyn Jones connect artists to buyers at Jenkintown\u2019s <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.moodyjonesgallery.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.moodyjonesgallery.org\/\">Moody Jones Gallery<\/a>, but their personal collection has more than 400 pieces. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cCollectors drive the market,\u201d said Valerie Gay, chief cultural officer for the city of Philadelphia. \u201cThey have the power to catapult an artist from obscurity to a household name.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Black collectors play an even more vital role in fine arts communities, explains Brooklyn, N.Y., collector Myah Brown Green, author of the forthcoming <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Keepers-Movement-Collectors-Preserve-Legacies\/dp\/0764371258\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Keepers-Movement-Collectors-Preserve-Legacies\/dp\/0764371258\">Keepers of a Movement: Black Collectors Who Preserve Art, Stories, and Legacies that Define Black Life<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">It\u2019s the Black collector who discovers artists at street fairs, off-the-beaten-path galleries, hair salons, and their friend\u2019s basement. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Their interest \u2014 like mid-20th-century author <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.albany.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-11\/Ellison-Bearden%20PowerPoint.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.albany.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-11\/Ellison-Bearden%20PowerPoint.pdf\">Ralph Ellison\u2019s enthusiasm<\/a> for Harlem Renaissance-era oil on canvas <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/beardenfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/beardenfoundation.org\/\">master Romare Bearden<\/a> \u2014 brings artists\u2019 work to a wider audience that can lead to cementing an artist\u2019s place in the fine arts canon. Their picks speak to the collective Black experience, shaping Black America\u2019s historical image. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cThey are the keepers of our history,\u201d Green said. \u201cMediators who carry the work forward and continue the legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Setting value<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The Black collectors\u2019 library, Jiggetts says, is the first stop on living artists\u2019 journeys to corporate boardrooms or the walls of major museums. \u201cOur role is that of an economist,\u201d Jiggetts said. \u201cWe set the value.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The Museum of African American Art Collections will next move to<a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/allenslane.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/allenslane.org\/\"> Allens Lane Art Center<\/a> for its February and March show and will host an exhibit at the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.diasporaeducationalservices.org\/black-lotus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.diasporaeducationalservices.org\/black-lotus\">Black Lotus Holistic Health Collective<\/a> in May and June. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Collectors shared their experiences over white wine and sweet potato cupcakes on opening night. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Daniel \u2014 whose collection features local masters \u2014 spoke effusively about her<a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/digital.library.temple.edu\/digital\/collection\/p15037coll17\/search\/searchterm\/dox%20thrash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/digital.library.temple.edu\/digital\/collection\/p15037coll17\/search\/searchterm\/dox%20thrash\"> Dox Thrash <\/a>mezzotint. She will never let the print by the important early 20th-century Black artist go, she said. Robyn Jones interpreted the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/authority-magazine\/jessie-read-5-things-i-wish-someone-told-me-when-i-first-became-an-artist-33f998dc2ed8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/authority-magazine\/jessie-read-5-things-i-wish-someone-told-me-when-i-first-became-an-artist-33f998dc2ed8\">Jesse Read<\/a> and <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.antoinetteelliswilliams.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.antoinetteelliswilliams.com\/\">Antoinette Ellis-Williams<\/a> vibrant abstracts. (This reporter thought both of those pieces were images of shoes.) <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The concept of a collectors museum is a new one. Black collectors are not. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cWe\u2019ve always collected our work,\u201d Jiggetts said, stressing that these times require Black people to be stewards of their own stories. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cAt the Museum of African American Art Collections, no one can tell us what to do, what not to do, and what we need to do differently. We don\u2019t have to worry about having it being taken away.
