Trust executive director Dick Garratt told the Herald it was a stunning night and showcased the best of M\u0101ori athletes at the home of the awards, T\u016brangawaewae.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt shows the calibre of M\u0101ori we have competing on the world stage in multiple sports,\u201d Garratt said.<\/p>\n

\u201cM\u0101ori are certainly making their mark in the traditional sports but also taking on new generation sporting challenges and it was a great night to celebrate that success.\u201d<\/p>\n
Garratt said holding the 35th awards at T\u016brangawaewae holds special status, as three generations of the K\u012bngitanga, Dame Te Atairangikaahu, K\u012bngi T\u016bheitia P\u014dtatau Te Wherowhero VII and now Te Arikinui Kuini Nga wai hono i te po, have each been the patron.<\/p>\n

Garratt said he was also looking to link Tongotea with a former winner, another M\u0101ori powerlifter, Cathy Millen \u2013 a legend in the sport who won five world titles across three weight classes in the early 1990s and held 11 consecutive world records.<\/p>\n
