prosecuted under a third law<\/a>: the Films, Videos and Publications Classifications Act 1993 \u2013 that\u2019s the one McSkimming broke.<\/p>\nTim Houston, manager of the child digital exploitation team at the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA), told the Herald bestiality content has always been around and they\u2019ve always detected it, but like most types of objectionable content, they\u2019re seizing more than they used to. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe rates by which we detect it in amongst offenders\u2019 collections has increased \u2013 I think due to the accessibility the internet provides.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said recently his team has discovered a couple of people making publications of themselves committing bestiality or indecency with animals, which was unusual. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis is not normal. It\u2019s certainly not typical for us.\u201d He said the cases haven\u2019t yet reached court and it\u2019s too early to tell if it\u2019s a trend. <\/p>\n

Court documents show McSkimming made 432 searches on his work devices, intended or highly likely to return objectionable material. <\/p>\n
His search terms included \u201cnude girl and dog\u201d, \u201ccaptioned dog sex\u201d, \u201cAI nude bestiality\u201d, \u201canimal v nude girl\u201d, \u201cnude girl with pets\u201d and \u201cnude human milk cow\u201d. <\/p>\n
While he was being investigated, he confided in a colleague that he had needed different types of pornography to make him feel anything \u2013 and it had just kept escalating. <\/p>\n

Jones told the Herald he has never met McSkimming but it sounded like a fairly typical scenario. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt sounds like a textbook satiation curve \u2013 where you need more stimulation to get the same effect. <\/p>\n
\u201cFrom what I\u2019ve read in the papers he doesn\u2019t sound like a bestiality guy \u2013 he sounds like a stimulation seeker. <\/p>\n
\u201cThere are a couple of types of objectionable publication downloaders. One group has specific material he\u2019s looking for: usually children, sometimes animals. Then there\u2019s the more common type \u2013 looking for anything with shock value. Bestiality material gives them a psychological effect.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re filling a gap in their lives. They\u2019re not perfectly well-balanced people. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a bit of a cliche but yeah go and look at their childhoods \u2013 you\u2019ll find abandonment, loneliness, alienation, relationship problems. Every case is slightly different.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou get satiated with one level and continually look for the next. It\u2019s stimulation, it\u2019s excitement, for people who feel trapped and bored and depressed and lonely.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said it often arrives in huge downloads of child sex abuse material and other illicit content swapped with other users. <\/p>\n
\u201cThose files are invariably a grab-bag of whatever deviance is going,\u201d Jones told the Herald. <\/p>\n
\u201cAlmost all of these guys are getting busted with a wide range of material outside their interests. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe range is huge: car crash videos, execution videos, whatever junk a reasonable person would never want \u2013 arrives. There\u2019s a large community on the internet catering to that race to the bottom.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u2018You want someone who\u2019s happy\u2019<\/p>\n
Clinically, bestiality is treated in a similar way to paedophilia.<\/p>\n
Jones helps patients identify factors that created the problem \u2013 usually boredom, frustration and lack of emotional intimacy in relationships \u2013 and they discuss the negative consequences of the behaviour. <\/p>\n
\u201cEmphasise the damage done to the victims \u2013 these are real children and you are contributing to their suffering \u2013 that\u2019s not so effective with the animals. <\/p>\n
\u201cThen make a plan so life gets better. If a major contributing problem was unhappy intimate relationships \u2013 work on those. If the problem was emotional regulation and depression \u2013 work on those. <\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s a small subset that actually has the deviant sexual interest in animals and for those there are more targeted treatments \u2013 mostly behavioural \u2013 so you would teach somebody essentially to masturbate to more appropriate material and increase their arousal to what they should want.\u201d<\/p>\n
Of the objectionable material offenders he says \u201cyou can help someone to stop being an offender but you don\u2019t want an angry, unhappy non-offender. <\/p>\n
\u201cWhat you want is someone who\u2019s happy in their life.\u201d <\/p>\n
