Just a few months before jumping to Apple, Subramanya joined Microsoft in July to become its corporate vice president of AI, where he worked on foundation models powering products like Microsoft Copilot, the company\u2019s AI assistant layer for productivity tools and enterprise services. He took that role after spending 16 years at Google, eventually becoming head of engineering for Gemini, Google\u2019s AI assistant and flagship generative AI product, which is <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/11\/25\/google-sleeping-giant-dark-horse-ai-race-gemini\/\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/11\/25\/google-sleeping-giant-dark-horse-ai-race-gemini\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">now having a moment<\/a>.<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/world\/who-is-amar-subramanya-indian-origin-ai-researcher-apple-appointed-ai-chief-10397572\/\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/world\/who-is-amar-subramanya-indian-origin-ai-researcher-apple-appointed-ai-chief-10397572\/\">\u200b<\/p>\n<p>At Google, Subramanya\u2019s path ran from staff research scientist to principal engineer, and then vice president of engineering, leading teams that linked machine-learning research to large-scale consumer products. He was awarded a Microsoft Research Graduate Fellowship in 2007, and later co-authored the book\u00a0Graph-Based Semi-Supervised Learning\u00a0with researcher Partha Pratim Talukdar, <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/amarsubramanya\/home\/Pubs?authuser=0\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/amarsubramanya\/home\/Pubs?authuser=0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">adding to a portfolio of papers<\/a> on natural language processing, entity resolution, and speech technologies.<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/amarsubramanya\/\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/amarsubramanya\/\">\u200b<\/p>\n<p>Apple\u2019s move comes as the company faces persistent scrutiny for trailing rivals like Google and Microsoft\u2014as well as AI upstarts like OpenAI and Anthropic\u2014in rolling out generative AI features, on the receiving end of some particularly rough criticism around voice assistants and system-wide AI tools. Apple, of course, was one of the first to make a mainstream voice assistant in Siri, but has since lost that early lead. Competitors have been faster to improve their models for usefulness and embed their own AI copilots and assistants into workflows, while Apple has moved more cautiously, emphasizing on-device processing and privacy alongside its Apple Intelligence rollout.<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/apple-names-amar-subramanya-vp-232718307.html\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/apple-names-amar-subramanya-vp-232718307.html\">\u200b<\/p>\n<p>Giannandrea, a former Google AI and Search chief who joined Apple in 2018, built the team that developed Apple\u2019s current AI infrastructure, including its own foundation models and search and knowledge systems.
