\u201cThese primates are not reliable in terms of predicting the toxicity, so you can get at least equal or better results in terms of your accuracy in predicting toxicology using other approaches,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
What\u2019s more, he noted, studies show that more than 90% of drugs deemed safe and effective in animals fail to win approval for human use.<\/p>\n
The FDA\u2019s announcement follows a report in the journal Science last month that the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention would close its primate labs and comes amid broader efforts by federal agencies to shift animal research towards newer technologies.<\/p>\n
It \u201cmoves us one step closer to wiping out the federal Government\u2019s wasteful monkey business,\u201d Justin Goodman of White Coat Waste Project told AFP.<\/p>\n
But the National Institutes of Health – the country\u2019s primary biomedical research agency – remains a notable \u201coutlier\u201d, he added. <\/p>\n
According to public data collected by his organisation, 7700 primates are confined in federal government labs and breeding facilities, of which 6700 are at NIH.<\/p>\n
\u2018We still need animals\u2019<\/p>\n
Among researchers, the move sparked concern about moving too far, too fast.<\/p>\n
Deborah Fuller, director of the Washington National Primate Research Centre – one of seven such centres established by the NIH in the 1960s – said the FDA\u2019s decision to reduce antibody-toxicity testing in monkeys was \u201cvery reasonable\u201d noting that non-animal methods are suitable for this purpose.<\/p>\n
But she warned that moving too quickly in other areas could jeopardise drug development.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis needs to be driven by the science and the data, not by [the] ideology of people just wanting to suddenly end animal research because it feels good and sounds good,\u201d she told AFP.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn terms of the next cures and biomedical advances, we still need animals,\u201d she said, adding that non-animal methods aren\u2019t yet as capable and that preclinical animal safety testing is the reason \u201cyou\u2019re not hearing about people dying\u201d during clinical trials.<\/p>\n
Proponents of animal testing also argue the research has been indispensable for major medical advances, including vaccines for diphtheria, yellow fever, measles and Covid-19.<\/p>\n
Critics counter that decades-old laws have created regulatory lock-in, that publication incentives reward animal studies in top journals, and that a lucrative \u201canimal-industrial complex\u201d has helped entrench the status quo.<\/p>\n
