When\u00a0Lisa Vanderpump<\/a> returned to our screens along with a slew of\u00a0new SUR-vers<\/a>\u00a0for the Vanderpump Rules<\/a> Season 12 premiere, the episode highlighted a sobering reality:\u00a0Lisa candidly sat her SUR staff down to detail SUR\u2019s financial issues, and make it crystal clear what\u2019s now at stake.<\/p>\n

\u201cRestaurant costs are up. Many restaurants close down. Four in the last week have closed down,\u201d Lisa bluntly said during a staff meeting in the Dec. 2 episode. \u201cNobody is surviving this s\u2014t. This is survival of the fittest.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

It came after Lisa\u2019s business partner, Nathalie Pouille Zapata, discovered surveillance video of SUR-vers Marcus Johnson<\/a> and Jason Cohen<\/a> sneaking drinks during a shift.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not respectful,\u201d Nathalie told Lisa ahead of the staff meeting. \u201cWe\u2019ve been struggling so much that, at least, you want to have the support of your staff.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Lisa explained during the episode, \u201cWest Hollywood was the center of the nightlife in Los Angeles. But since COVID, it never seemed to recover. SUR has survived, but it hasn\u2019t been thriving.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although Lisa and her husband Ken Todd<\/a> made the decision to close another of their iconic restaurants, Pump,<\/a> during Season 11, Lisa was determined not to let the same thing happen to SUR.<\/p>\n

\u201cI already made the decision to say goodbye to one baby. I\u2019m not gonna do it again,\u201d she declared during a confessional interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Lisa also tried to reassure Nathalie, and told her, \u201cS\u2014t like this goes on, okay? We\u2019re going to catch it, we\u2019re going to deal with it, and this restaurant\u2014I know it\u2019s been a really hard few months for you. We have survived over the years. We\u2019re going to survive now, okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

To her staff, Lisa added another warning: \u201cIf we are going to continue to survive, this is a business. It\u2019s about being your best and your brightest.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lisa Vanderpump explains why her staff is so important at SUR<\/p>\n

As Season 12 welcomes a new shift of SUR-vers and bartenders, Lisa emphasized that her staff is the key to SUR\u2019s financial success.

\u201cSUR has been in business for 20 years,\u201d she explained during the Dec. 2 premiere. \u201cOne of the reasons we\u2019ve lasted as long as we have is the high expectations for the food, and the ambiance. But without a vibrant staff, it wouldn\u2019t be SUR.\u201d<\/p>\n

The show\u2019s announcement in Nov. 2024 called the new cast \u201cclose knit SUR-vers who are as complicatedly involved with one another as their iconic predecessors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vanderpump Rules executive producer Alex Baskin also weighed in on the announcement, saying, \u201cWhat a thrill it is to build on the legacy of this series by doing it all over again. With profound appreciation for the original group and their iconic run, we can\u2019t wait for the audience to see a dynamic new group of co-workers and friends make their way through life together.”<\/p>\n

Lisa teased the new season<\/a> and new cast to TMZ<\/a> in February, when she insisted it\u2019s \u201cnot going to disappoint.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

She added to Us Weekly<\/a>, “When you have a restaurant, especially in Hollywood, with a revolving door of beautiful people who are all kinds of normally rather large personalities because they come to Hollywood for a reason, it’s always complicated. I am sure it’s gonna be very different with these young minxes when they get to work, but we shall see. I got some very interesting characters for sure, but SUR has been around for a very long time, and as I say, it’s a show we could have shot 12 months of the year.”<\/p>\n

Lisa Vanderpump reveals why a new group of SUR-vers was needed <\/p>\n

Although Alex Baskin called the first 11 seasons of Vanderpump Rules \u201cextraordinary,\u201d he was frank about the reason for the cast shakeup<\/a> during the season finale of his Bravo\u2019s Hot Mic\u00a0Podcast<\/a>,\u00a0which included a sit-down with Lisa. He explained the show \u201cwasn\u2019t grounded in what it originally had been\u201d as the focus in later seasons had become more on the cast members\u2019 personal and professional lives outside of SUR.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Original cast members who were on all 11 seasons included Tom Sandoval<\/a>, Katie Maloney<\/a>, and Scheana Shay<\/a>. Some cast members moved on to\u00a0The Valley<\/a>, including Brittany Cartwright<\/a>, Kristen Doute<\/a>, Lala Kent<\/a> and Tom Schwartz<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Lisa shared she felt the Season 11 cast\u2019s lives had just taken \u201ca different direction.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt that we told the story, and we always said together that we didn\u2019t want to go down on a sinking ship,\u201d Lisa continued. \u201cIt just changed, and I think that I still have a great relationship with some of them. But the others, their attitude changed, and it wasn\u2019t what we set out to be. So, I think it was time to move on.\u201d<\/p>\n
