\u201cCozy crime\u201d book recommendations have long-since popped up on the TikTok feed of Spotify\u2019s\u00a0 audiobooks editorial manager, Roshni Radia.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThink of crime or a murder that happens in a church graveyard, and the person who finds the body is an 80-year-old woman who’s been undervalued her whole life,\u201d Radia explained. \u201cShe meets up with some friends to solve the crime \u2014 there\u2019s no blood and no gore \u2014 that\u2019s my genre of choice.\u201d<\/p>\n
While Radia acknowledged \u201ccozy crime\u201d is \u201ctoo niche to impose on all Spotify listeners,\u201d she helped launch Big on BookTok, a Spotify page for book lovers to listen to and share their own genres of choice. The page, created in partnership with TikTok, launched Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur editorial wants to talk to every single book-loving community: On Valentine\u2019s day, we\u2019ll talk to the\u00a0lovers of romance<\/a>; and in January, we\u2019ll talk to the lovers of new learning,\u201d Radia, who manages editorial for Spotify\u2019s Australian, New Zealand and European markets, told Campaign. \u201cBut it was a really interesting opportunity to talk to BookTok, which has an established nature and has already created its own community.\u201d<\/p>\n #BookTok \u2014 a TikTok hashtag that\u2019s accumulated\u00a052 million<\/a>\u00a0book review and recommendation posts from readers and authors \u2014 inspired Big on BookTok. The page is available until November and will update every two weeks with new \u201ccurrent obsessions\u201d and \u201chottest authors\u201d based on data directly from TikTok.\u00a0<\/p>\n The platform\u2019s first batch of books includes\u00a0The Summer I Turned Pretty, a title that\u2019s accumulated 1 million TikTok posts and was developed into a hit Amazon Prime Video series;\u00a0A Court of Thorns and Roses, a \u201cromantasy\u201d series mentioned in over 191,000 TikTok posts; and\u00a0Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which Spotify labeled as a BookTok \u201ccurrent obsession\u201d as\u00a0Wicked\u00a0fans anticipate the\u00a0Wicked: For Good\u00a0movie theater premiere in November.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re encouraging people to share what they\u2019re listening to \u2014 to feel the excitement at the chance to read or listen to something completely brand-new and realize, \u2018this is wonderful, I need to tell everybody about it,\u2019\u201d Radia explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n In addition to BookTok, Spotify\u2019s recent campaigns highlight specific listening communities \u2014 from the August-launched\u00a0Fan Life campaign<\/a>\u00a0for artist superfans to share \u201cfandom\u201d rituals,\u201d to the 2021-launched\u00a0Glow initiative<\/a>\u00a0bolstering LGBTQ+ artists with billboards, partnerships and designated page on the platform. It also\u00a0launched in-app direct messaging<\/a>\u00a0for sharing songs, audiobooks and podcasts in August to further position itself as a social platform.<\/p>\n \u201cBookTok is passionate about books, and they\u2019re so keen to share that passion with each other,\u201d Radia said. \u201cWe wanted to tap into that, and I hope this can help with that fun aspect of social sharing: listening to something on your phone and having a community right there in your hand.\u201d<\/p>\n Spotify, the world\u2019s leading streaming platform, has a selection of over\u00a0350,000 audiobooks and hosts over 696 million monthly active users<\/a>\u00a0worldwide.
