Another MIT Early Childhood Education student, Sera Allen, said the impending closure of the school has forced her to consider delaying or discontinuing her studies.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s the convenience of having the daycare on-site, being able to drop my son and then go to class, I have peace of mind.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf anything goes wrong, they can call me and I\u2019ll be there in a minute max. Or if I need to study a bit later, I\u2019ll ask \u2018Can I pick him up at this time?\u2019 and they\u2019ll say, \u2018That\u2019s fine, you do that\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a letter to parents on Monday, MIT said it had made attempts over \u201cseveral years\u201d to stabilise the school\u2019s financial situation.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have explored a range of options, including marketing initiatives, staff discounts, and external advice on growing enrolments.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnfortunately, these measures did not achieve the level of revenue required to secure the centre\u2019s future.\u201d<\/p>\n
A petition launched by parents to keep the school open has received almost 1000 signatures in just two days. It questions the lack of consultation in MIT\u2019s decision-making process and highlights the impact on working families.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s been around for 30 years, so it\u2019s basically a piece of \u014ctara that they\u2019re just scratching off the map,\u201d Cerutti said.<\/p>\n
Parents and community are willing to do their part to help, Allen said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf it\u2019s financial reasons, we can pay for food for the kids, we can get more tamariki in the daycare.\u201d<\/p>\n
MIT deputy chief executive \u2013 learner experience and success, Simon Nash, said in a statement to the Herald, \u201cWe understand the disruption the closure of the centre will cause to those who use it.<\/p>\n
