A grandmother from Scotland has been dubbed “Super Gran” after finishing in third place in the 70-74 age group at the Hyrox World Championships in Chicago. <\/p>\n

Carole Munro, 71, from Turriff, Aberdeenshire, has a black belt in karate as well as a background in squash, judo, kayaking, triathlons and sea swimming.<\/p>\n

Ms Munro took up Hyrox after her son, a personal trainer, suggested she try it.<\/p>\n

Despite having undergone hip operations in previous years, she qualified for the championship following a singles Hyrox race in London in late 2024.<\/p>\n

Hyrox combines eight one-kilometre runs with demanding strength and endurance stations, including sledge pushes\/pulls, weighted lunges, wall balls, rowing, and more, all inside a large indoor venue.<\/p>\n

Munro described how, during the Chicago race, she felt hip pain by the third lap but persevered through to the end.<\/p>\n

Finishing third in her age group, among a small field of women in the 70 – 74 category, earned her a podium place at the world level. <\/p>\n

She has said her aim is not only to compete again but also to inspire others, particularly older adults, to challenge conventional expectations of age and fitness. <\/p>\n

Describing her journey, she told the BBC: “My son decided to do a competition and said, Do you know? Do you want to go along with me?<\/p>\n

“So I went and Googled it and I thought it was like high rocks, like climbing, but it’s not.<\/p>\n

“It’s actually a competition of running 8km, and every kilometre you have to do an extensive exercise.”<\/p>\n

She added: “We did a mixed doubles, and then I realised I had to do men’s weights.”<\/p>\n

Munro revealed that the pair completed the challenge in one hour and 30 minutes.<\/p>\n

She added: “I was quite chuffed.”<\/p>\n

The 71-year-old told the broadcaster that she was looking to take on the challenge again in March.<\/p>\n

Munro said: “I’ve just had my third hip operation, so I’m grounded just now.<\/p>\n

“And I did have a competition in London, which I’ve had to put off.<\/p>\n

“So my next one is in March in Glasgow. So I’m hoping I’m fighting fit for that.<\/p>\n
