He recommends these exercises for &#8217;20 minutes at a high intensity&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>What the science says<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Mixing up workout styles like this has long been shown to improve the chances you&#8217;ll stick to a fitness routine. A <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26546241\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26546241\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"2016 paper\" data-node-id=\"12.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2016 paper<\/a> in Journal of Behavioural Medicine found that when 121 previously inactive adults were encouraged to follow different types of exercise for six weeks, the group who had a higher &#8216;experience of variety&#8217; stuck to the programme more than those in the low variety cohort. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Another <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.news.ufl.edu\/articles\/2000\/10\/adding-variety-to-an-exercise-routine-helps-increase-adherence.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/archive.news.ufl.edu\/articles\/2000\/10\/adding-variety-to-an-exercise-routine-helps-increase-adherence.html\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"14.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a> of 114 people found that when exercise varied between workouts, there was a much lower dropout rate compared to groups performing the same moves at each workout or with no set schedule. The mixed-move exercisers were 15% more likely than the second group and 63% more likely than the third group to stick to a regular exercise routine. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Meanwhile, new  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/psychology\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyg.2020.577522\/full?utm_source\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/psychology\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyg.2020.577522\/full?utm_source\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"research\" data-node-id=\"16.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">research<\/a> in Frontiers in Psychology suggests that we may stick with exercise for longer when our workouts feel fresh and varied. Meeting our often-overlooked psychological needs for novelty and change helped people feel more interested, more motivated and genuinely enjoy what they were doing.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The study found that we\u2019re more likely to slip into a &#8216;flow state&#8217; \u2013 that deeply absorbed, time-flies feeling \u2013 when an activity offers something new to explore or a different way to move.
