There\u2019s no better test of upper-body strength than the bench press<\/a>. It\u2019s a technical lift that demands precision and power \u2013 and 15-year-old Colter Rammell has already mastered it, setting a world record for his age group last month.<\/p>\n

Competing as the youngest member of Team USA at the World Powerlifting Championship<\/a> in Durban, South Africa, Rammell identified the bench press as his best shot at a record. The squat<\/a> and deadlift<\/a> marks were out of reach, but the bench felt possible.<\/p>\n

There was just one challenge: he needed to bench equipped \u2013 a variation he\u2019d only practised five times before the event. Equipped lifting uses a compression-style shirt that squeezes the arms together and provides a slingshot-like rebound out of the bottom of the lift.<\/p>\n

Despite the limited preparation, Rammell delivered. On his second attempt, he pressed 90kg to set a new world record in the single-ply bench category for his age. \u2018Raw is what he usually does,\u2019 his dad, Greg Rammell, told KSL. \u2018But equipped is basically wearing a compression shirt. We got the shirt, practised four or five times, and he went down there and set a world record. That was pretty neat.\u2019

Rammell also competed in the ‘raw’ bench press category, where lifters rely solely on their strength without any extra support. And the records didn’t stop there, with the 15-year-old breaking his national record by pressing 100kg \u2013 a full 150% more than his 66.4kg bodyweight going into the competition. <\/p>\n

But while he’s still got some way to go to start challenging the 355kg raw bench press record set by Julius Madox, or Jimmy Kolb’s 635kg equipped bench, there’s plenty of promising signs in Rammell’s early career. ‘I enjoyed it. There was a lot of people there,’ he said. ‘There was South Africa, Britain, Russia, Australia, Germany. A lot of different people.’<\/p>\n
